  3. WARM UP • DISCUSS WITH A PARTNER WHAT YOU THINK SMOKING DOES TO YOUR BODY. • WHAT ARE THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS?

  4. TURN TO PAGE 29 - 31 IN YOUR WORKBOOK. • PAIRS READ: PLEASE READ EVERY OTHER PARAGRAPH WITH THE PERSON AT YOUR DESK. REVIEW THE KEY POINTS WITH YOUR PARTNER.

  7. QUESTIONS??????????????? • Do smokers have a faster heart rate than non smokers? • Yes, because veins and arteries shrink causing the heart to work harder to transport blood and oxygen to the body.

Facts About Smoking • 90% of all cases of lung cancer occur in people who smoke • There is no cure for lung cancer and 90-95% of lung cancer victims die within 5 years • Heart disease is the biggest killer in the US • There is no cure for heart disease and 70% of all heart attack victims die within 5 years. • Research has indicated that every cigarette a person smokes takes about 6 minutes off their life.

Facts Continued • Tar is the common name for a mixture of substances that is produced as the tobacco burns • Nicotine is an oily compound which can kill instantly in pure form. • Carbon Monoxide is another deadly poison found in cigarette smoke which decreases the ability of the blood to furnish the body with oxygen. • Tobacco may lead to use of other drugs
