  1. 5 Harmful Chemical Ingredients Used in Cosmetics Skincare products aren't always designed to be good for you. K-beauty skin care routines are famous for a reason and that is because the products eliminate harmful chemical ingredients. Simple is better for the skin and not a cocktail of toxic chemicals. Unfortunately, commercial products are designed for more sales. Think about it: if that were not the case, there would be no skin and medicinal patches being sold in the industry. As a consumer, becoming aware of what goes in your product goes a long way towards prevention. If you're serious or new to cosmetics, here are the top 5 harmful chemical ingredients you should be watching out for. 1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are foaming agents or 'surfactants' that are used in everyday products. You'll find it being used in soaps and shampoos as well. What's well know about these two ingredients is how they are skin irritants. When left to sit on the skin for prolonged periods of time, they damage the outer layer. This leads to the

  2. development of 'cracked' and dry skin. Growing evidence also suggests the presence of these two compounds located in breast tumors. 2. Petroleum Jelly Petroleum Jelly is found in most commercial skincare products these days. It's not water- soluble and suffocates your skin's pores when applied. The way it works is it seals up the skin's barrier like a plastic wrap, giving the illusion of staying moisturized or hydrated. However, by trapping air and moisture it just makes things like diaper rashes and acne worse. 3. Cyclomethicone and Siloxanes Cyclomethicone and Siloxanes are chemical compounds used commonly in household creams and moisturizers. What makes them dangerous is how they are toxic to the liver and gastrointestinal system. Besides making your skin smooth and soft, they tend to dry up your hair quickly. The compound Cyclopentasiloxane which is also called D4 has been classified by the European Union to be an endocrine disruptor and a hazard to human fertility. The D4, D5, and D6 siloxanes together make up Cyclomethicone. 4. DEA (diethanolamine) DEA is a chemical compound used in skincare and cosmetics. It is mostly found in moisturizers, sunscreens and gives cosmetics the creamy texture. Lab experiments revealed that exposure to high doses of DEA leads to incidences of liver cancer and precancerous skin and thyroid changes. DEA in cosmetics is also known to interact with nitrates and form nitrosamines which have been classified by NCBI studies to be possible human carcinogens. 5. Triclosan Triclosan is found mostly in toothpaste, shower gels, soaps, and deodorants. The American Medical Association has dubbed it to be 'dangerous to human health' as prolonged exposure to it causes liver damage and thyroid disorders. In fact, using products containing it develops resistance to antibiotics and may even cause cancer!

  3. Even Newsweek Magazine had a say in the matter about avoiding products containing it like the plague. Now that you're aware of the harmful ingredients that lurk in commercial skincare products, it's time to take a step back and return to the natural way.
