  1. Programme purpose • Ensures future investment takes advantage of cutting edge technology. • Developed to ensure the UK invests in sustainable, technology that delivers ‘state of the art’ efficiencies • Maximises use of AD for waste processing, energy production and GHG reduction by demonstrating technology options in a de-risked environment.

  2. Programme aims • maximising the cost effective production of biogas; • maximising the environmental benefits from the use of anaerobic digestion and its products; • maximising the potential of anaerobic digestion to reduce the carbon footprint of the food supply chain; • maximising the opportunity for the injection of biomethane into the gas grid; and • maximising the potential of anaerobic digestion to reduce the carbon footprint of water treatment infrastructure.

  3. What this means in practice • Is anyone doing this already? • Does it meet 1 or more of the aims? • Will it be replicable?

  4. Funding model • Total fund - £10M • For between 3 and 6 projects • Can either: • fund a total amount spread over the whole project; or • fund specific assets in full.

  5. PAS110 & ADQP INPUT 1 The model OPERATIONAL PROCESS CORE DIGESTION INPUT 2 PRE- PROCESSING POST PROCESSING CASE STUDY CASE STUDY OPERATION OPERATION INPUT 3 BUILD PHASE MONITORING OPERATIONAL MONITORING INPUT 4 £ WRAP £ CO-FUNDING £ WRAP £ CO- FUNDING 2009 MARCH 2011 MARCH 2012

  6. Funding constraints • Assets owned by the funding body • Bought back at the end of the project at ‘market rate’ • IP generated by the project would be owned by WRAP for the purposes of dissemination • Background IP (already in existence) remains under its original ownership

  7. Timeline – Phase one (build) 12 Wks Panel assessment + Environmental, H&S and financial assessment Launch 16 Sept 08 Deadline 13.309 Dec 08 Draft contracts (On site Environmental Audit) Inform applicants Mid-Feb 09 Contracts signed FACILITY COMMISSIONED By 31 March 2011 To Phase 2 Operation Project build

  8. The two phases • Phase One – Build • The application and assessment process • Contract negotiation • Project build • Dry and wet commissioning (March 2011) • Agreement and implementation of the data package

  9. The two phases • Phase Two – Operation • Day to day operations • Monitoring in accordance with the data package • Site visits, seminars etc • Final reports

  10. How do we select projects • Projects are all scored against the assessment criteria • Demonstration of 1 or more of the aims? • Innovative? • Deliverable? • Replicable? • All detailed in the application document • Only scored on what’s in the bid

  11. How to apply • See the application document for detailed instructions • Project partners • Innovation • Evidence • Clarity

  12. ETF versus WRAP Organics capital • Both launched on the 16th • Clear blue water between them • WRAP capital = capacity building programme, diverting food waste from landfill (400KT of new capacity). Includes IVC, AD and aerobic digestion • ETF = achieving the five aims using AD and innovative technologies

  13. Help! • ETF workshops • Birmingham – 7th October • London – 14th October • Capital workshops • Birmingham – 8th October • Leeds – 9th October • Edinburgh – 10th October • London – 15th October • Project team – available to answer questions
