  1. Journey Into Holiness – p.13 “Hard Questions of the Christian Faith”Matthew 22:15-44

  2. A loaded question is loaded because the people who ask it usually have an agenda, expect an “either / or” answer and, are genuinely amazed when they discover other possibilities.

  3. The question of authority Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.

  4. The question of authority You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

  5. The question of authority But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax."

  6. The question of authority They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied.

  7. The question of authority Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away. - Matthew 22:15-22 (NIV)

  8. The question of authority • The issue they present to Jesus is the excessivetaxes the Romans collected from the Jews. • Some estimate that a Jewish family paid approximately 49-50 percent of its annual income to these various taxes.

  9. The question of authority “Whose portrait is this?”

  10. The question of authority • The word Jesus used for portrait is the Greek word eichon. We get our word icon from that word. • Give” means payback – that which is rightfully due. • Jesus answer amazed them.

  11. The question of authority Application: • Make God the ultimateauthority in your life and give Him what is rightfully due Him.

  12. The question of eternity • That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. - Matthew 22:23 (NIV) • The Sadducees are existentialists with religious positions.

  13. The question of eternity "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. Now there were seven brothers among us.

  14. The question of eternity The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh.

  15. The question of eternity Finally, the woman died. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?“ – Matthew 22:24-28 (NIV)

  16. The question of eternity The Sadducees have two errors in their approach: • They don’t know the Scriptures and they don’t know the power of God

  17. The question of eternity At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.

  18. The question of eternity But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." - Matthew 22:29-32 (NIV)

  19. The question of eternity The crowds were astonished… When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching. - Matthew 22:33 (NIV)

  20. The question of eternity • APPLICATION: • Examine the Scriptures and trust God has power to do what He says He cando! • Learn to live in faith instead of astonishment.

  21. The question of priority Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

  22. The question of priority "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. - Matthew 22:34-38 (NIV)

  23. The question of priority • Loving God is giving yourself to Him with your entire person. “Hear O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one”.

  24. The question of priority • And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

  25. The question of priority • Application: • Give yourself to God unconditionally. • Today I will be a neighbor to (you fill in the blank)

  26. Jesus Bottom Line: I am the Messiah – Your King! (vv.41-44) While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?"       "The son of David," they replied.

  27. Jesus Bottom Line: I am the Messiah – Your King! (vv.41-44) He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says,

  28. Jesus Bottom Line: I am the Messiah – Your King! (vv.41-44)  " 'The Lord said to my Lord:       "Sit at my right hand    until I put your enemies       under your feet." '

  29. My Bottom Line:
