    1. City of Costa Mesa Child Care and Youth Services Committee Report January 3, 2005

    2. Purpose The purpose of the Committee is to provide perspective and input regarding community projects, improvements, and activities which pertain to and/or are of interest to Costa Mesa children and/or youth.

    3. Objectives The Committee provides support to the City Council, Commissions, Committees, and City staff on issues related to children and youth.

    4. History 1985 Committee was established as an “ad hoc” committee under the title of Child Care Committee Original Purpose of the committee Review existing child care sources in the community Determine the number of children needing child care Survey the need for additional child care Advise Council of the child care issues 1987 City Council changed the status of the committee from “ad hoc” to a “regular” committee. 1993 City Council changed the committee title to Child Care & Youth Services Committee

    5. Committee Structure Eight Committee members and two alternates representing: Residents Parents Center-based & Family Child Care Providers Newport-Mesa USD Orange Coast College Council Liaison: Katrina Foley Staff Liaison: Richard Brunette

    7. Logistics Meetings 1st Wednesday of the Month 6:30 p.m. at Costa Mesa City Hall: Conference Room 1A Licensed Family Child Care Home

    8. Goal 1, 2 & 9 Bi-annually revise the Child Care and Youth Activities Directory Quarterly update of the Child & Youth Services Committee information on the City’s Web page Distribution of Brochures to Community Agencies Goal 1 Continue to revise &/or re-print “Child Care” & “ Youth Activities” directories as needed, including web site addresses in revised directories where possible and applicable Goal 2 Keep “Child & Youth Services Committee” Information on the City’s web page updated Goal 9 Provide “Child Care” and “Teen “ Directories to community organizations, the Chamber of Commerce and/or agencies that welcome new home and business owners to Costa MesaGoal 1 Continue to revise &/or re-print “Child Care” & “ Youth Activities” directories as needed, including web site addresses in revised directories where possible and applicable Goal 2 Keep “Child & Youth Services Committee” Information on the City’s web page updated Goal 9 Provide “Child Care” and “Teen “ Directories to community organizations, the Chamber of Commerce and/or agencies that welcome new home and business owners to Costa Mesa

    9. Goal 3 Goals Continue involvement with the Advisory Committee of Teens (ACT) where applicable Attended Spring 2004 meetings of ACT Continue to attend meetings as needed

Goal 4 Collaboration with a variety of community agencies, including: Orange County Association for the Education of Young Children California School Age Consortium Orange County Child Care Association Orange County Child Care Planning and Development Council Orange County Department of Education Newport-Mesa USD Identify and collaborate with programs with programs/areas sharing common ground with CommitteeIdentify and collaborate with programs with programs/areas sharing common ground with Committee

Goal 5 Host and Sponsor a Complimentary ˝ day Educational Conference School Age Co-sponsored with California School Age Consortium Spring of each year Approximately 40-60 Costa Mesa participants Goal 5 Host training and workshops for CalSAC/Costa Mesa Child Care ProvidersGoal 5 Host training and workshops for CalSAC/Costa Mesa Child Care Providers

    13. Goal 6 Day in the Park National celebration of programs and services for young children Co-sponsored with Orange County Association for the Education of Young Children Third Week in April Approximately 500 attendance Goal 6 Continue participation in community eventsGoal 6 Continue participation in community events

    14. Goal 7 Maintain memberships in California School Age Consortium National Association for the Education of Young Children and its affiliates

    15. Goal 8 Keep abreast of Newport Mesa Unified School District Board Meetings issues relating to youth and child care Review Board meeting minutes

    16. Goal 10 Continue to work on reviewing existing sources of child care in the community, determine the number of children needing child care and need for additional child care facilities, and advise City Council of potential options for City involvement relating to child care issues

    17. A Special Thanks to… City Council for their support of child and youth programs. The child & youth programs whom provide care for the youngest residents of Costa Mesa.
