  1. WWK: How Tsunami’s, Volcanoes, and Storm Surges affect the human population Chris Leal

  2. Tsunami • A tsunami is a series of ocean waves generated by sudden displacements in the sea floor, landslides, or volcanic activity. • In the deep ocean, the tsunami wave may only be a few inches high. • It may come to shore gently or moving fast being several meters high.

  3. Volcano • Volcanoes act as vents in the earth surface where molten rock, gases and pyroclastic debris erupt through the earth's crust. An eruption is a sudden outpouring of a particular substance from somewhere. • When magma (Hot fluid below or within the earth's crust from which lava is formed) erupts through the earth's surface it is called lava. Lava can be thick and slow-moving or thin and fast-moving.

  4. Storm Surges Along the coast, storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane. A Storm surge is produced by water being pushed toward the shore by the force of the winds moving around the storm.

  5. How it affects population • Many of the natural disasters that occur cause people to have to relocate, or cause massive amounts of damage to citizens homes and property. • All 3 of these natural disasters are harmful and cause massive amounts of damage.

  6. KS • What do natural disasters cause people to do?

  8. WWK: How population growth, the burning of fossil fuels, use of fresh water, global warming, and deforestation impact Earth’s subsytems. • Aimee Simon

  9. Population Growth • With population growth, the increase in number of people who inhabit a state, the risk of overpopulation could occur. • This could in turn cause a lack of land, difficulty in managing waste resulting in higher pollution, and the unability to produce goods to fulfill the basic needs of inhabitants.

  10. Burning of Fossil Fuels • The burning of fossil fuels, a combustible organic material such as coal or gas, release pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. • These emissions contribute towards the Greenhouse effect, raising the Earth’s temperature. They also effect human health and may cause asthma.

  11. Fresh Water • The demand for fresh water, water that is not salty, resources is accelarating. • 70% of the worlds water is used in agriculture, 20% in industry, and 10% for consumers. • Overuse of water has dried up the Arial Sea, and the Colorado River no longer reaches the sea.

  12. Global Warming • Global warming is the gradual increase in the temperature of the earth's atmosphere, believed to be due to the greenhouse effect • This warming causes ice to melt worldwide, the sea level to rise, an increase in precipitation, and a reduction in the amount of fresh water availability.

  13. Deforestation • The world’s rain forests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation. • Deforestation destroys the homes for millions of species, drives climate change, and lessens the amount of greenhouse gases being absorbed.

  14. Vocab • Fresh water-water that does not contain a large amount of salt • Population growth-increase in number of people who inhabit a state • Global warming-the gradual increase in the temperature of the earth's atmosphere • Fossil fuels-any combustible organic material, as oil, coal, or natural gas, derived from the remains of former life

  15. KS What percent of the world’s water is used by human consumption?

  17. WWKHow the use of resources affects earth’s subsystems.

  18. The use of Earth’s minerals • Did you know that the average automobile contains more than a ton of iron and steel, and more than thirty other mineral commodities?(a naturally occurring substance that is solid and stable at room temperature) • Our mineral resources are depleting rapidly, demanding that new mineral deposits be found and put into production. We are using up Earth’s minerals at a fast rate and eventually we will not have some of the things we have today because there will be nothing left to make them. The digging and production of mineral deposits destroys acres of land and trees and destroys many animal’s habitats.

  19. Alternative Energy Sources • Coal is one of our main resources we use for energy. By burning it in plants and factories, it gives us the energy we use in our homes. However the burning of coal releases harmful chemicals into the environment. • Many rules and procedures these days keep many of these chemicals out of the air, but not all of it. One alternative many homes, and some factories are taking is the use of solar energy (radiant energy emitted by the sun). Solar energy is incredibly resourceful and has many benefits like cutting down your electricity bill, it is a renewable energy source, and it is environmentally friendly.

  20. Fossil Fuels • Fossil fuels are the largest greenhouse gas emitters in the world, contributing 3/4 of all carbon, methane and other greenhouse gas emissions. Burning coal, petroleum and other fossil fuels at extremely high temperatures (combustion) is the primary means by which electricity is produced, but also leads to heavy concentrations of pollutants in our air and water. • The use of these fossil fuels are taking a huge effect on our systems and subsystems(a system that is part of some larger system). If further actions are not taken to control these fossil fuels our earth will continue to heat up which can have devastating effects.

  21. K.S. • What is one alternative energy source we can use instead of coal? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKpAxfKh8-w

  22. Zak Rowton WWK: How Earthquakes, Floods and Hurricanes effect the earth.

  23. Flooding Floods can cause drains to overflow causing water diseases to spread around the city. Meteorologists (- A scientist who studies weather.)can usually predict this type of weather to prevent these unlikely events. Floods can also cause crops to wash away preventing food growth.

  24. Earthquakes Earthquakes can cause what is called The Butterfly Effect ( - The idea that a small effect or thing can have a large impact if it happens to tip the balance, causing other changes that create a major event.) Because even a small earthquake in the ocean can cause catastrophic tsunamis that can wash away towns and cities. They can also effect the way humans have to live because they can bring down buildings and homes. Convection Currents - The process of transferring heat by the large movement of particles that have been heated, into a cooler fluid area. Convection Currents cause the air in a certain place to circulate cause plates to shift which can also cause Earthquakes.

  25. Hurricanes Hurricanes can cause serious damage to cities and can wipe out entire towns. They can produce up to 100 MPH wind gusts and over 3 feet of rain causing floods and other catastrophic events. The Eye – (A relatively calm, clear area at the center of a hurricane.) means that only half of the storm has past and more is still to come.
