  2. HONORS PROGRAM • Initiated by Eugene Wong, a former chair of the department 20 years ago • To provide students with a broader education

  3. Why work even harder? • Engineering field is very broad • Applications depend on synergism between sub-disciplines, e.g. comm theory, circuits, computing • Opportunities increasingly in applications • Expertise beyond engineering field

  4. Career Benefits • Competitive edge • Grad school • Internships • Employment opportunities

  5. Benefits of the Program • Official notation of honors degree on Berkeley transcript • Many honors students do very well and receive departmental awards • Bi-annual dinner with faculty

  6. SuccessfulHonors Application • Typically in junior or sophomore year • A clear idea of what you want to do that goes beyond the “normal degree”: • Expertise in non-EECS field (e.g. minor in physics, MCB, music, cognitive science, …) • Research experience (not required at application time)

  7. Eligibility Requirements • At least 45 units completed at Berkeley.  (This may also include up to ten AP units.)  • Junior Transfers applicants must have completed at least 12 units at UCB and typically apply at the end of their second semester. • Completion of lower-division requirements for the degree. • Minimum overall GPA of 3.7. • Applicants with only one semester remaining are not typically admitted.

  8. Program Requirements: • Fulfill all degree requirements in EECS or L&S CS. • At least four units of supervised 199 Independent Study, EECS 199, H196, or other approved research, taken on a P/NP graded basis. • A breadth requirement, consisting of at least 3 upper division courses (totaling at least 10 units) taken for a letter grade, outside the College of Engineering.  • The breadth requirement courses may be taken in a single department, or in related departments if they address a unifying theme.

  9. HONORS ACHIEVEMENTS National Awards National Science Foundation Fellowships Katherine Yiu, Allen Tsou Honorable Mention: Allen Gu, Kun Gao, Daniel Hsu Computing Research Association Outstanding Undergraduates Award Finalists: Margaret Yau, Meng Yu Honorable Mention: Kun Gao Michael Yu EECS Departmental Awards Departmental Citation 2008 Matthew Johnson Warren Dere Chua Award 2008 Wai Son (Wilson) Ko Arthur M. Negahban, Philip Godoy • Mark D. Weiser Excellence in Computing Scholarship Chung Ming Wu

  11. SELECTION • The committee evaluates applications  for various signs of aptitude including: a well-written essay, above-average course loads, sincere commitment to a breadth area outside EECS, and grades. • Other factors that may strengthen an application include: departmental or campus service, undergraduate research experience, and interest in attending graduate school.

  12. TO APPLY • Download an application from the website, or from the Center for Student Affairs in 205 Cory Hall.  http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Programs/honors.html • Applications accepted twice yearly; the deadline is typically the last day of classes each semester. • Deadline: Friday, December 4, 2009
