  1. Purpose ? to help jump-start your writing by focusing on ONE defining moment Put yourself into a brief scene Write in historical present tense FLASHDRAFT

  2. Create a list of potential “defining moments.” Use handout if you need ideas. Write ALL of your ideas down. As you narrow down your choice, be sure to keep in mind that you are going BEYOND telling a story; you are, like Alice Walker did, explaining how a moment DEFINED YOU. Brainstorm

  3. WHY is this a “defining moment” for you? What understand/realization about yourself did you arrive at through this moment? What’s your theme? As you decide on a topic, think about…

  4. I adjust my white “Hollywood” sunglasses to perfectly frame my face for the photo shoot my cousin Kim and I organized. She is in front of me, Polaroid camera glued to her face. “Put your hand on your hip like the models in the magazines do,” she instructs. I comply and place my hand on the white ruffle of my royal blue one piece bathing suit and jut my hip out. I am having a blast pretending to be something I am not, though at the moment, I feel every bit like a model. Grinning, striking a sassy pose, Kim yells, “Smile!” and I hear the click of the camera. Out shoots a white framed, blurry photo. Grabbing it from her hand, I fan it quickly, excited to see the end result. Slowly a picture starts to form; I see the deep blue of my bathing suit, my ponytailed head, and then.... My legs. Thighs to be specific. I stare only at the horrid sight, ignoring my worry-free smile. Ignoring the look of sheer joy on my face. Ignoring everything. Except those thighs. So big. So not like a model. Flashdraft Example
