  3. Pre-Registration Nursing Programmes BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies: • Adult • Children’s • Mental Health • Learning Disabilities

  4. Adult Nursing • Caring for adults of all ages • Hospital setting • Medicine • Surgery • Care of older people • Critical care • Community Setting • Primary care • Community Nursing • Nursing Homes • Dementia care/services • Walk-in / urgent care centres • Involves multi-agency working

  5. Children’s Nursing • Is about caring for a child whether ill or healthy • It encompasses the whole family and promotes family-centred care • Hospital and community setting

  6. Mental Health Nursing • A discipline that enables people to reach and maintain their mental health and social goals in order to achieve their optimum quality of life • Involves collaborative working with service users (and their families where appropriate) in a partnership approach • Work with children, working age adults and the older person • In residential units, wards, clients’ homes and in the community • Involves effective working with other agencies (eg. Social Services)

Learning Disabilities Nursing • You will make a specialised contribution to the lives of people with learning disabilities across the age spectrum & in a range of settings • You will assist individuals with all aspects of their lives (eg health, social, employment) to enable them to achieve optimum health and social wellbeing • Support children, adults and older people with complex needs (eg autism, challenging behaviour, multiple disabilities, mental health problems & dementia) • Lead improvements in both specialist and mainstream services for people with learning disabilities & their families/carers

Academic Entry Requirements • Applicants must apply through UCAS • Minimum of 240 UCAS tariff points....OR • Equivalent qualifications (e.g. QAA-recognised Access Course) • Plus GCSE passes at grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics / equivalent qualifications (egLevel 2 Functional Skills in Communication and Numeracy)

  10. Other Requirements • Success at interview • Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Clearance • Satisfactory workplace risk assessment • Good references

  11. Bursaries • Non means tested Grant - £1000 per year • Means tested bursary • Non means tested Maintenance Loan • Final amount dependent on individual circumstances

What will you study? • Range of modules undertaken each year • Year 1 – Focuses on development of fundamental knowledge & skills required to deliver quality patient care in all fields of nursing (care, compassion & communication, human development/functioning across the age continuum, decision-making, improving health & well being, professional nursing practice – mostly core modules) • Year 2 – Focuses on field of nursing practice. Modules further develop decision-making skills, explore use of evidence to promote best practice/nursing care, service provision & user/carer experience • Year 3 – Modules facilitate development of leadership skills, ability to effectively manage patient care & improve health/social care practice within field of nursing • Each year – 50% of time spent in practice • You will gain some practice experience of other fields of nursing

  13. Practice Placements • 5000+ Placements across the region – audited to ensure suitability • Placement could be anywhere within university’s placement circuit • Shifts – must experience 24 hour / 7 days per week care

  16. The Application Process • Via UCAS • Closes January 15th • Late applications only considered if places available • Applications stamped and processed in date order

  17. The Selection Process • All applicants undergo a standardised selection process prior to being made a conditional offer: • Short listing • Interview

  18. Short Listing Criteria used by admissions tutors: • Application form is fully completed • Eligibility for DH bursary • Academic entry requirements • Maths/English • Studied within last 5 years • Personal statement • References

Personal Statement • Must be supportive of chosen nursing programme • What generated your interest in the field of nursing • Insight into the programme applied for and some of the demands to be faced • How past study has prepared you • Relevant work or life experience and how it has prepared you for the professional programme • Interests / hobbies • What have you got to offer in terms of personal qualities and skills

  20. Interview Performance • Verbal communication • Non verbal communication • Knowledge of chosen field of nursing • Demands of nursing • Enthusiasm for nursing and becoming a nurse • A future career plan • Potential to become a “professional”
