Lecture Bidding (In a Nutshell) • Every semester, each student receives 1,000 pts • You decide which module you want to read • Use the pts to bid for that module lecture class • If your bid price > your peers, you win & get enrolled into that module lecture class CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

Bidding Points • Pts deposited for bidding of modules (every sem) into 2 accounts • Programme (P) account • Generally to be used for modules within your major or faculty (please refer to your faculty for the specific rules) • E.g. SoC student, CS1101 • General (G) account • for modules that fulfill university level requirements, and unrestricted electives • E.g. GEM/SS, USP, minor modules & etc • Pts not transferable between accts G P CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

Bidding Points (Cont’d) • 1,000 pts distributed to 2 accounts (every sem) • Decided by degree requirements • Unused pts – carried forward to next semester • Bonus pts • Teaching feedback/IAP, 100 pts  2 accts (every sem) according to distribution above, e.g. FASS, 60 to P, 40 to G • CORS student survey, 30 pts  G acct (every acad yr) CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

  9. Fairness in Bidding • Grouping concepts • New students • 2 consecutive sems, starting from Matriculated sem • E.g. Matriculated AY07/08 sem 1: New for AY07/08 sem 1 & 2 • Returning students • Any students who are NOT new CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

Fairness in Bidding • Protection in bidding implemented through bidding queues • For every module, there is a unique set of bidding queue: • Pr = Only returning students can bid & pay using P acct • Pn = Only new students can bid & pay using P acct • G = All students can bid & pay using G acct • Queues will be combined at a certain point in the bidding rounds (See Sem 1 bidding description ) CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

Bidding Rounds (Cont’d) • Student can bid for a module when • There is a matching queue (Pr or Pn)for that module for that student group (new or returning) in that round • See sem 1 bidding round description • The module type code configured for that round matches what the student is taking that module as • See module type code table CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

Workload Policy During Bidding • Before round 3 starts, total max. workload allowed for all students is computed in this way: • Cannot exceed 5 module count (selected + allocated) • Any module >= 2 MCs count as 1 • < 2 MCs not counted • AND Total no. of max. modular credit (MC) workload configured by faculties • Round 3 onwards, ONLY max. MCs workload condition applies CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

Workload Policy During Bidding (Cont’d) • Why impose module count rule before round 3? • Want to ensure every students have a fair ‘dip’ of up to 5 modules in early rounds • Students who wish to take > 5 modules can bid for excess modules from round 3 onwards • Subjected to max. Bidding Types • Defines bidding activities permitted in a single bidding round • Current bidding • Open Stage (All bidding statistics available) • ClosedStage (No bidding statistics available) • Advance bidding  Place bid for module which: • Is not open for current bidding round. Module Allocation (Cont’d) • Allocation policy • When you succeed in a bid, • You are enrolled in the module lecture class • In cases where your bid price exceeds the module price, you will enjoy a refund of the excess • Determination of module bid price • No. of bidders <= quota, all bidders pay 1 pt • No. of bidders > quota, all successful bidders pay lowest successful bid • If there is a tie in bid, first bid first serve (FBFS) policy applied CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

Module Allocation (Cont’d) • Penalties for dropping an allocated module • Before “W” grade deadline • 50% of module successful bid price • “W” grade period (starts 25 Aug, 0000 hrs) • Module will be withdrawn with a “W” grade • NO refund of bid points • “F” grade period (starts 29 Sept, 0000 hrs) • Module will be given an “F” grade, CAP affected • ALL pts will be refunded • If you have been allocated a module & you fail the module • ALL pts will be refunded CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009

Tutorial Balloting (In a Nutshell) • Your module lecture class must first be registered • Click on module code to select tutorial class • Rank the selected tutorial class in ascending order (1 = highest priority … up to 20) • Duplicate rank not allowed (i.e. 2 classes of the same priority) • NOT first come first served • NO bidding pts involved • Allocation is completely RANDOM CORS Briefing for Students 2008-2009
