1. Park City School District Summer School Program 2012 Overview

2. For the past three years the school district has been working in partnership with Holy Cross Ministries to provide a full day program to children. • Children from kindergarten to 5th grade were invited to participate, the invitation was based on teacher referrals. • The program ran four days a week from 8:30am to 3pm, for six weeks. Half day was dedicated to academic support while the second part of the day was for recreational and the enrichment activities. • During the day all the kids have the opportunity to receive academic support and participate in recreational activities.

3. 6 certified teachers and 7 teacher assistants provided instructional support. While 5 Holy Cross Ministries employees took over the recreational piece along with 5 permanent volunteers and 20 Latinos in Action who participated as they were needed. • Transportation, breakfast and lunch was provided to all students at no cost. • Utah Food Bank through their Back Pack program provided food for 100 children every Thursday.

4. CURRICULUM

5. Math. Review and practice math facts as well as introducing the concept of more open ended thinking and extensions of math problems as they relate to their everyday experiences and the common core. • Language Arts. Focused on maintaining and increasing fluency and comprehension based on small group instruction and opportunities to discussed and write about daily/weekly experiences and world connections, i.e. this year Summer Olympics.

Through partnerships with Holy Cross, organizations like the Aquatic Center, PC Tennis, Girls Scouts, and Basic Recreation Center offered recreational support. • During the recreational portion of the program students participated in dance, tennis, and swimming lessons; they were also exposed to arts and crafts workshops and as well as science experiments. • Summit County Library-Book Mobile visited school grounds once week, students were able to check out books according to their reading abilities. Library staff also participated once a week in storytelling activities.

In a survey given to 91 students in the Summer Program on sportsmanship, HCM saw the following results: • More than three fourths of students said they were polite to others when playing sports (77%). • Students indicated that they tell the truth, despite the consequences (65%). • More than three fourths of students indicated that they treat others the way he/she would like to be treated (77%). • Students indicated that they include others who may not be as good at the sport (68%) • - Students indicated that they play fair and don’t cheat when playing sports (69%).

12. In a survey given to 66 students in grades 3-5 on the Summer School Program Quality and Satisfaction, HCM saw the following results: • More than half of the Students felt that the activities in the Summer Program were interesting (52%). • 7 out of 10 Students indicated that they learned new things in the Summer Program (71%). • Many Students indicated that they enjoyed coming to the Summer Program (73%). • Most students felt safe at the Summer Program (77%). • Many students indicated that they liked the staff from the Summer Program (73%). • - Almost 9 out 10 Students felt that staff treated everyone fairly (89.4%).
