Improving Air Quality and Breathing Better One School at Time! • The Greenville County Planning Commission, Fountain Inn Elementary School and SCDHEC • Implementing a voluntary no idling policy as part of their campaign to help improve air quality and students’ health. • This is a replication project. Several schools have already implemented this project.

  3. Mow Down Pollution! The First-Ever Lawn Mower Exchange Project in South Carolina Lexington and Richland County, Keep the Midlands Beautiful, The SC State Museum, Neuton Electric Lawn Mowers and SCDHEC Over 150 gasoline-powered lawn mowers were collected. Survey data revealed that nearly 40% of the mowers turned in were between five and ten years old, and over 20% were more than ten years old.

Open Burning Initiatives • Consultation to local government entities regarding open burning policy • Partnering with local government entities to support open burning initiatives • Inter-bureau workgroup to coordinate enforcement of state open burning regulations & open dumping • Inter-bureau workgroup is developing a statewide open burning awareness campaign

Open Burning Partner: SC Forestry Commission • Expanded Fire Prevention Team project to include air quality message • Anderson & Lexington counties • Partners: FC, DHEC, County officials • Intense 2 week outreach/education effort; media blitz • Burn site inspections/warnings • Follow-up later/enforcement

  6. Lexington County • Strengthened open burning ordinance • Increasing the distance for residential yard burning • Banning open burning of land clearing and right-of way maintenance during ozone season • Formation of stakeholder committee • Civil Penalties/back to AQ projects

Greenville County • Public Awareness Campaign • Liaison assigned to each City • Presentations to City Councils, fire depts., civic groups…. • Car Care Event • Partners: AAA, Goodwill, Michelin, Spinx • May 12, 2007 • Manager of Environmental Programs • City of Greenville • Full time bicycle pedestrian planner
