  1. 11 Healthy Foods & Lifestyle Habits That May Reduce The Risk Of Cancer A leading British survey in 2008 enlisted a combination of four healthy food and lifestyle habits that enhances the quality of life. The research reported that people who follow these habits add an average of 14 years to their lives as compared to those who did not follow any of them. These were keeping away from smoking, maintaining an active lifestyle, regulating the consumption of alcohol and a daily intake of five portions of fruits and green vegetables. They often help in fighting ailments and cancer is no exception. Though these healthy food habits do not guarantee that they can restrict the growth of malignant tumours, they may reduce the possibility of the same. The recommended proportion of fruits, vegetables and grains is usually considered to be two-thirds of the total daily food intake. For non-vegetarians, it is usually recommended that fish, chicken and other varieties of meat be restricted to one-thirds of the daily dietary requirements and the amount of processed food be restricted. While a regulated diet and lifestyle is the secret to a healthy life, 11 food products, habits and best practices may be recommended for the prevention of cancer: 1.Regulate alcohol consumption Those who are habituated with consuming larger quantities of alcohol need to restrict it to less than one glass for women and less than two for men. Consuming larger quantities may accelerate the risk of breast, throat, mouth and oesophageal cancer. When breast cancer requires other line of treatments along with chemotherapy, Amish Dalal reviews the medical tests of patients and decides on the necessity of a surgery. 2.Maintain an active lifestyle People who spend a larger part of their day at work or watching television are considered to be at a higher risk of being diagnosed with colon and endometrial cancer than those who lead an active lifestyle. Further, women who strictly follow a daily exercise routine are believed to be at a lower risk of breast cancer than those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. Moderate exercise is usually considered to reduce blood oestrogen levels, a hormone that may increase the risk of breast cancer. Some studies indicate that daily exercises may reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer by improving insulin

  2. metabolism. With the help of advanced technology in the medical field, Doctor Amish Dalal can assess a patient’s condition and undertake the best course of surgery, if required. 3.Opt out of dry cleaning The inhalation or repeated exposure to ‘Perchloroethylene’ or ‘perc’ that is usually a component of dry cleaning agents is a known cause for kidney and liver damage and cancer. When dry cleaning is absolutely necessary, leaving the clothes outside or in another room for airing is believed to rid them from the harmful effects of these chemicals. 4.Incorporate cruciferous vegetables Consumption of cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower once a week is often considered to reduce the risk of kidney cancer as compared to those who incorporate it in their diet less than once a month. For patients with breast or ovarian cancer, Dr. Amis Dalal, an accomplished Surgical Oncologist with an experience of 30 years, decides on the necessity of a surgery. 5.Boil your broccoli Broccoli is usually considered to be an effective super food for prevention of cancer. The form in which the vegetable is consumed holds significance to the degree of nutritious components that it contributes. Consuming it in its steamed form rather than fried, boiled or microwaved, contributes to glucosinolate that increases the possibility of prevention of cancer. 6.Drink green tea Some researches indicate at green tea being effective in lowering the risk of ovarian, breast, prostrate, colon and lung cancer because it contains one of the most effective anti-cancer compounds, named EGCG. When the situation demands exploration of alternative treatments, Amish Dalal may recommend surgery to patients. 7.Incorporate garlic into your diet Garlic contains allyl sulfur compounds that may boost the immune system and defend against cancer. It may also have the potential to fight against chemicals that might lead to cancer or act as a catalyst in causing the cancerous cells to die a natural death. Some studies indicate that a lesser percentage of women suffer from colon cancer as a result of garlic consumption than those with a negligible intake of the same. 8.Marinate meat Exposure of meat to high temperatures while grilling and frying creates compounds known as heterocyclic amines that may enhance the risk of cancer. It is usually believed that these compounds affect the human DNA to the extent that they lead to the growth of tumours in the breast, colon, lymph and prostrate. Marinating meat with herbs like rosemary and thyme is also considered to lower the ill effects of this compound. In case of the growth of tumours in the breast, chemotherapy and/or surgery may become the recommended course of treatment. Dr. Amish Vasant Dalal is adept in determining the medical condition of patients and advising on the necessity of a surgery.

  3. 9.Drink milk Calcium is believed to be an effective nutrient in protecting against colon cancer. Daily consumption of low-fat milk and milk products like yoghurt may lower the risk of colon cancer. 10.Restrict pickled and smoked food Pickled and smoked foods contain carcinogens, which are often considered to increase the risk of gastric cancers. 11.Avoid aerated drinks Apart from being a major contributor of obesity and diabetes, they are often believed to enhance the risk of endometrial cancer among women, a major side effect of obesity. Patients diagnosed with cancer can book an appointment with Amish Dalal at Jaslok Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital, Bhatia General Hospital, Saifee Hospital or Parsee General Hospital.
