  1. Sound Technician by Danielle Gebert

  2. Description of the Job • Sound technicians have technical knowledge and work with sound production. • What the job requires depends on the task that is given to the person. • Sound technicians working with movies are divided into production sound mixers and boom operators. • Production sound mixers record sound so that the dialogue, sound quality, sound effects and atmosphere tracks are clear enough to use. • Boom operators work with mechanical, hand and radio microphones. They make sure that the mike is not in the shot while filming. • Sound technicians that work with radio and television put microphones on and monitor sound during interviews, no matter if it is live or recorded. They also determine sound quality. • Sound performers working at concerts determine the sound quality for live or broadcasted audiences listening on the radio. They determine what the performers hear on their headphones and maintain the tone, quality and volume of sound.

  3. Training Required • Sound technicians will get the basic skills and training they need from formal post-secondary training. • It is also recommended that they take journalism, film, electronics or music programs that offer sound training.

  4. Schools/Colleges/University Programs • The Audio Recording Academy was first established in Ottawa in 1992 and was then branched to Toronto in 2002. • The classrooms are fully functional recording studios, which makes it possible for students to learn the procedures involved in band studio recording sessions. • Students also get exposed to real life recording environment, making easier for them to find a job.

  5. Salaries • The mean hourly wage in the US for sound technicians is $26.07, and the mean annual wages is $54 200.

  6. Possible Employers The range of potential employers is large, and they include: • The BBC • independent television companies such as ITV, Channel4 and Channel 5, as well as the vast range of digital television channels; • commercial and corporate production companies; • specialist program makers; • music industry producers/studios; • facilities houses - businesses that offer the broadcasting and entertainment industries facilities such as post-production services and audio correction; • independent radio.

  7. Why I Chose This Career • I chose this career because I didn’t know what a sound technician did and I thought it would be interesting to find about what they did.
