InTASC Standard Eight: Instructional Strategies • The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways. • Name of Artifact: Online classes • Date: 11/11/2013 • Course: EDUC 101: Introduction to Teaching. • Brief Description: In this research I searched for the pros and cons of taking online classes and all the technology used in classes in this time. • Rationale: To document my understanding on standard eight. I researched information about strategies and ways to build skills through online classes and make it have the same effect as face to face classroom environment.

  3. Online classes are very common now whether you are taking a full course online or just all the work that we have online in any general class. Almost all classes require online to some extent and that to me is a problem for many reasons. Online work can be difficult to do if you do not have the access to it or the knowledge that is required. “User friendly and reliable technology is critical to a successful online program. However, even the most sophisticated technology is not 100% reliable. “

  4. The growth in online learning is rising dramatically. “Just six years ago, surveys showed that merely 60 percent of American school-aged children used the Internet. Yet as of November 2006, a PEW Internet & American Life Project survey showed a dramatic increase, with 93 percent of teenagers online regularly and more than nine in 10 Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 using the Internet”. • “Appropriately implemented, online learning ... could play an important role in reducing the current rate of high school dropouts”. • Online classes also offer opportunities for students to enroll in advanced courses or specialized electives not taught at their schools due to the lack of qualified teachers or resources or scheduling conflicts.

  5. The Pros for online classes • Choosing study times whenever it’s convenient • Flexibility in completing assignments. • Not sitting in a classroom. • Balance a job and class • The credits transfer often • Student Centered • No commuting/traveling time to a campus

  6. The Cons of online classes • Limited instructor interaction • Technological challenges/requirements • Mandatory self-discipline • No feedback • No campus environment • Social interaction

  7. Questions? Are all the conveniences worth taking online classes? Is it more complicated to take a class without a visual instructor ?
