Can you use chopsticks? • Take a basic vitamin for a least the first few months as your body is being shocked by a new diet. • Say goodbye to large steaks… forever…. • Japanese food uses ALOT of rice. You may feel really tired and have sugar cravings. • Combini food is tasty but its your next heartattack. • Good luck trying to be a vegetarian!

  3. Regularity • Most of you will be going through a diet shock and your body will be going through some trails and tribulations. • Eat ALOT of vegetables that are high in fiber. It helps move things along nicely…

  4. Advise for the hot months • Drinks lots and lots of fluids as it is really hot and humid! • Switch from any sugary drinks like coke to either tea or water. It is really hot this time of year and you will dehydrate. • Make sure you are drinking something other than beer.

  5. Japan has four seasons! • Japanese cooking is very seasonal! • Certain foods and dishes are only served during certain months. • Your local farm cooperative will be overstocked with four vegetables for two months at a time…. daikon anyone?

  6. Strategies for buying • There a lot of good groceries stores in Ibaraki with widely varying prices. Jusco would be one of the cheaper ones. • Check out a farm cooperative or a mom and pop food shop. The food could up to a third of a the normal store price! • The later at night you go to the store the more likely you will see a 20%, 30%, or 50% off sticker. Most stores liquidate any fresh fish or prepared foods towards the end of their closing hours.

  7. Foreign Food Stores • Foreign food stores often are geared for bulk buying and are popping up more and more often all over Ibaraki. • Costco is in Chiba and in Tokyo. Should you crave a 5 kilo can of nacho cheese, rest assured the option is there. • Most spices as well as common alcohol are at places like Yamaya and Kawasaki

  8. What`s that smell? • Natto or rotten moldy food • Japan is very hot in humid in summer and food tends to go bad very quickly • Seal any packages that you open. Bugs may invade or mold will develop quickly. • Make damn sure your rice is secured and sealed at all times.

  9. Japanese food • Its an adventure! • Restaurants in Japan are great for cuisine but beware the prices. Make sure you the price of what you are pointing too and beware a seating charge. • Eat it even if don’t know what it is. It can be fun and life changing.

  10. Advise for vegetarians • Max and Japanese people think vegetarians are weird. • Memorize the phrases from page === in your handbook. • Stating that you do not eat meat does not mean you do not also eat cheese, fish, pork, or chicken as well as fish broth. You must be very explicit.

  11. Allergies • If you have allergies make damn sure you memorize the phrases on page ===
