  1. Day 1 Name of Poem: Tree Heartbeat Response: Note down 2-3 sensory images from this poem. Your Poem: 3-5 Stanzas about an object associated with childhood.

  2. Day 2 Name of Poem: Campfire lullaby/Night Songs Response: Note down 2-3 sensory images from each poem. Your Poem: Invent your own form and stick to it. Use strong describing words.

  3. Day 3 Name of Poem: Langston Hughes Poems (4) Response: Choose 2 of the 4 poems and write down 2-3 sentences responding to each. Your Poem: Model your poem on one of the ones we read. Use “metaphor with an attitude” – Come up with an issue bigger than you to focus on.

  4. Day 4 Name of Poem: Afternoon Beach Response: Note down 1 of each: Sensory details, personification, metaphor Your Poem: Write about a sensory Experience. Describe something you enjoy. Play around with the form of the poem.

  5. Day 5 Name of Poem: Homemade Swimming Hole Response: Find the 3 most powerful words (for you) in the poem. Your Poem: Choose a moment when you were completely in the present moment. Use metaphor and personification.

  6. Day 6 Name of Poem: When I was Searching for a Poem/Deeper Response: Find one example in each poem of internal story. Your Poem: Be sure your poem has: Interaction with you and nature (use personification – project an internal story on the natural object), your internal story.

  7. Day 7 Name of Poem: On Turning Ten Response: Find 1 example of an extended metaphor and 1 short metaphor. Your Poem: A nostalgic look back at another time in your life. Use extended metaphor.

  8. Day 8 Name of Poem: 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird Response: Find 1 stanza and write a response to it. • Your Poem: • Pick an object – living or non-living • Find different ways to look at that object. • Write 7 short stanzas showing 7 different perspectives of that object.

  9. Day 9 Name of Poem: Aubade/January Thaw Response: None Your Poem: Rhyme Scheme abab, cbcb, dede, aaca “Rounding it Out” form 16 lines, 2 repeating, 1st line returns as last 2nd returns mid-poem/ possible variation

  10. Day 10 Name of Poem: Mom/I Once Knew a Girl Response: 2-3 sentences about how you feel when you read these two poems. Your Poem: Write your own with 2 parallel (mirror image) stanzas – now and then.

  11. Days 11 - 15 Name of Poems: The Highwayman/ The Hangman Response: Find 2-3 examples in each poem of “Repetition with a Twist”. Your Poem: Write your own story poem. Be sure to use a plot mountain for the structure of the poem.
