  2. DSM IV Criteria Generalized Anxiety Disorder • A) Excessive anxiety & worry (apprehensive expectation) occuring more days than not for at least 6 months . About a number of events or activities. • B) The person finds it difficult to control the worry

  3. C) The anxiety and worry are associated with 3 (or more) of the following 6 symptoms (with at least some symptoms present for more days than not for the past 6 months) 1) Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge 2) Being easily fatigued 3) Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank

  4. 4) Irritability 5) Muscle tension 6) Sleep disturbance • D) Focus of worry is not confined to features of an axis 1 disorder • E) The anxiety, worry or physical symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas

  5. F) Disturbance not due to substance use, general medical conditions or occur exclusively during a mood disorder, psychotic disorder or pervasive developmental disorder.

DSM IV Criteria for Adjustment Disorder • A) Development of emotional or behavioural symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor(s) occurring within 3 months of the onset of the stressor(s) • B) Symptoms are clinically significant as evidenced by either of the following: 1) marked distress in excess of what would be expected from exposure to stressor(s) 2) Significant impairment in social or occupational functioning

C) The stress related disturbance is not merely an exacerbation of a pre-existing disorder • D) Symptoms tdo not represent bereavement • E) Once the stressor or its consequences has passed the symptoms do not persist for more than 6 months Specify if acute (less than 6 months) or chronic (more than 6 months)

  10. Adjustment disorder can be coded with a subtype: - with depressed mood - with anxiety - with mixed anxiety and depressed mood - with disturbance of conduct - with mixed disturbance of emotions and conduct - Unspecified

  11. Vignette 1: Simple Phobia • Excessive, causing distress and irrational – what aspects of the case show these things? • What parts of her life are being affected by this phobia? • What treatment could be beneficial with this woman?

  12. Vignette #2 Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • What from the case indicate this person has obsessions? • What from the case indicates this person experiences compulsions? • How would these symptoms impact on the person’s life? • What is the difference between everyday superstitions and OCD?
