  3. Process Science Project Engineering Project • Organize a team and pick a topic! • Submit proposal (1 paragraph per team) • Background research (At least 5 citations and 3 summary sentences per resource) • Describe your need, criteria, and constraints • Draw Prototype Design • Submit designs • Build your prototype! • Organize a team and pick a topic! • Submit proposal (1 paragraph per team) in eClass • Background research (At least 5 citations and 3 summary sentences per resource) • Submit Question, Hypothesis, and Variables • Design experiment • Submit designs • Complete your experiment!

  4. Final Steps: • Collect Data • Analyze Results • Write Conclusion • Write Lab report • Design your board • Win science fair!

  5. Key Points • Work by yourself, with a partner or group of three • Groups cannot be larger than 3 people! • You will have to get a science fair board. (Cost about $3) • Required! • Science Fair is…. • Whole school is competing! • We’ll have judges and prizes! • Winners will go to county science fair next year!

  6. Grades • These parts count as test grades: • Proposal • Lab Book • Science Report (counts 2 times!) • Project Board • Presentation • These parts count as classwork grades: • Background research • Submitting question, hypothesis, and variables (or need, criteria and constraints) • Submitting Designs • Revising Designs • Data Analysis • Conclusion

  7. So where do I start?

  8. With an idea!

  9. Where to Get Ideas • Test a commercial claim (best brand of paper towels, best toilet paper, best tooth paste, longest lasting battery, etc) • Fix an experiment we did this year (fruit decomposition, heart rate and exercise, etc) • Design something! (Here’s you chance to invent the bed-maker-automatic!) • What do you love to do? (Yes! You can play video games for this HW assignment!) • What’s a topic you want to know more about? (Do pea plants really have dominant and recessive traits?) • What do you think would improve the world? (How can we help people with arthritis?) • Use your life for a spring board! https://www.googlesciencefair.com/springboard/en/

  10. Project Ideas • What factors affect mold growth? • What affects do certain chemicals have on plant life? • How do planaria react to changes in light, pH, or temperature changes?   • Are night insects attracted to lamps because of heat or light? • Do bacteria affect plant growth? • How does exercise affect body temperature? • Which is more effective against bacteria, hand sanitizers or soap? • How does the salinity of water affect the hatching population of brine shrimp? • How does the volume of sound affect heart rate? • How does the age of a person affect reaction time? • How does the type of music affect heart rate? • Botany Science Fair Project Ideas How does magnetism affect the growth of blooms? • Which plants are the best conductors of electricity? • How do different types of water (distilled, acidic) affect plants? • How do different colors of light affect plant growth? • How do phosphates affect aquatic plants? • How does soil temperature affect seed germination? • How does soil temperature affect root growth? • Do vitamins affect plant growth? • Do plants grow better in water or soil? • Does the 5 second rule work? • What is the impact of temperature on the rate of decomposition?

  11. First Task • By 3/17/14, I need to know your team and topic • 3/24/14- Your proposal is due! (one paragraph, I’ll have the template next week)

  12. Take 8 ½ minutes to mingle and brainstorm now! • http://www.online-stopwatch.com/countdown/
