Sexual Exploitation In Nepal About 200,000 girls are involved in the Indian Sex Trade and about 10,000 girls join them every year Within a couple months, sometimes a year, they will have contracted a STD, usually HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) which causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), although it can be other STD’s as well Women and girls get trafficked easily across the 1,740 mile long open border between Nepal and India When they reach Indian Brothels, they are beaten, raped, and starved until they begin to accept clients
Education Education is believed by many to be the critical force that can exterminate child labor forever, but it is easier said than done in Nepal. Nepal’s Adult Literacy rate as of 2007 are at 56.5%. The adults being ignorant and not understanding that child labor in unethical harms the cause in a major way. Educating the children of Nepal is the best way to prevent those old, immoral traditions and beliefs (ex. Child marriage) from being passed down to later generations because education gives the children the ability to think rationally and clearly about these old values and see the flaws in them. This kind of thinking and education can annihilate child labor completely if applied.
Government Involvement • The Nepalese Government has been very inefficient combating the growing problem of child labor • Local agencies has led the most effective charge so far on eliminating child labor (ex. RugMark, now known as GoodWeave) • GoodWeave monitors carpet factories, making sure no child labor is used to make those rugs/carpets GoodWeave mark the rugs that are made without child labor with these logos so that people know that there carpets and rugs were made without child labor
International Cooperation • If all the countries in South Asia were to come together , discuss and create a plan to stop child labor throughout the region, which will stop the trafficking of women and girls to other parts of the world. They could also crack down on the pimps who trafficking these girls across the Nepal-India border and to other parts of South Asia. • This heavily depends on the government of these countries to work because if they don’t cooperate, they can never find a solution for this and the horrors of child labor will linger on.
