Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program started in 1996 Mission Statement: The Flagship Program is a community/school partnership that provides skill-building opportunities that enhance the social, academic, and cultural achievement of Missoula’s youth to help them succeed in school and become productive adults.

Flagship Statistics September 2011 – August 2012 • 2,500 students participated IN • 539 different activities WITH • 906 volunteers who DONATED • 13,750 volunteer hours Flagship is located in 8 Missoula County Public Schools: Franklin, Hawthorne and Lowell Elementary Schools Porter and Washington Middle Schools Big Sky, Hellgate, and Willard Alternative High Schools

  7. C & I 395 Expectations • Prepare and facilitate lessons with a literacy component. • Be a leader and role model • Be prompt • Track hours • Communicate w/ Flagship coordinator and group members • Keep reflection journals up to date

  8. Lesson Planning • One formal lesson plan • Lesson plan format • Supervisor sign-off • Observation schedule and guidelines • Send materials list to supervisor

  9. Incorporating Literacy • Example: Smokejumpers 1-10 lesson • Listening, word recognition, story structure, reading out loud, writing, word repetition, etc.

  10. Weekly Journals • Send via e-mail within two days • Your observations and personal experience • Journal topics • Open, ongoing communication is important!

  11. The First Day • Come off confident, be prepared and have boundaries. • Establish yourself as the person in charge. • Go over the rules and expectations. • Explain what the class will be like. • Name tags!!!!!

  15. Delivery of Instructions: • Specify expected behaviors! • Be clear and age appropriate. • Show examples of projects and demonstrate them step by step! • Write directions on the board as well when possible. • Model how you expect them to get materials and put them away.
