San Mateo High School • Comprehensive high school in the San Mateo Union High School District. • 1,452 students • SMUHSD is currently in the middle of a budget crisis. • 42.9% Caucasian, 25.85% Hispanic, 17.88% Asian-American, 6.13% African-American, 4.8% Pacific Island, 2.37% Filipino, 1 .07% Indian/Alaskan

  4. My Classroom • 11th Grade College Prep U.S. History • 32 students • 3-5 students are AP level • 5 students with special needs • 5 male athletes • 1 student is RFEP • 4 students with language difficulties

  6. The Unit • The Vietnam War • Unit Question: Why did the U.S. lose the Vietnam War? • Big Ideas: • Escalation of troops, Unique Warfare, Media Coverage, Antiwar Movement, Nixon Years, and Lessons Learned

  7. The Lesson • Tet Offensive newspaper articles • Objectives: • Multiple Perspectives • Media Influence • Manipulation of Photos

  11. Engaging and Supporting all students in learning: • Build on prior knowledge, personal experience, and interests • pre-tests, journals, baseball • Actively engage all students in critical/historical thinking • identifying bias, multiple perspectives/causality
