  4. What is Character? Character is an indescribable wonder of the world and greatest characteristic of a human being The greatness of a man is not in working miracles, doing wonders, preaching sermons or clever theories. It lies in the possession of a mighty Character.

  5. Characteristics Of Character? Reliability (Promise-keeping) Integrity Trustworthiness Responsibility Loyalty Honesty Respect Kindness Citizenship Accountability Fairness/Justice Caring Self-Restraint (Self-control)/Ethics Tolerance & Acceptance Generosity

  6. Why is Character important? Let’s take a closer look at what Character is and why it is so important that everyone should strive to develop a positive Character…

  7. Components of Character • Character is not what we display for others to see. • It is who we are - even when no one is watching. • Set of Behaviour Traits in a person. • Not hereditary, not born with Specific Character. • How we respond to successes, failures, opportunities, fears, desires and challenges? • Regardless of background, everyone is born with the opportunity to become a person of exemplary Character...

  8. When Character Building starts? Mother’s lap

  9. Character in Islam Characteris what’s in here... Holy Prophet (PBUH) said... ‘In the body is a piece of flesh; if it is pure, the whole body will be pure; but if is corrupt, the whole body will be corrupt. Indeed it is the heart’. (Sahih Bukhari) • “I have been sent only for the purpose of perfecting good morals”. (Al-Muwatta, Musnad Ahmad) • “The best amongst you are the best in character and manners.” (Al-Bukhaari) • "There is nothing heavier in the scales than good character."

  10. Character in Other Cultures/Societies • ‘Good character is life of right conduct’ said Aristotle.(Jody Palmer, 1986). • ‘To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to create a menace to society.’ (President Theodore Roosevelt26th US president 1858-1919) • Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike. (Theodore Roosevelt) • The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.  (Abigail van Buren & Pauline Esther Friedman, American newspaper advice columnist 1918-2002)

  11. Character and Personality Personality The combination of personal preferences, attitude, likes and dislikes and social skills. E.g. the type of book you like to read, or whether you like art or football. Character • Combination of morals and beliefs that dictates how we treat Ourselves and others • The basis for our every thought, action, and decision • The means by which we distinguish between right and wrong.

  12. Do we Need to Change? It is our duty to change ourselves into perfect moral individuals, because we are the role models of tomorrowand the active agents of change. If we wish to repair the broken image of our nation, rebuild trust with other countries, and build healthy-living communities of high morals and values in Pakistan. We must change our character!

  13. Guidelines for Character Building

  14. The Character Account From The Inside Out You can begin to build good character at any age. The key is learning how to look within – to work inside out. With the inside-out approach, private victories precede public victories. These private victories are simply promises you make to yourself and others and then keep. Day by day, as you make and keep increasingly challenging promises, you will be making deposits in your “character account”.

  15. We cannot succeed in Arranging the blocks of Good Characterwithout Planning! Need BOB’s Strategy Be “Brilliant at the Basics,"

  16. Character & Habits What begins as great effort will eventually become habit. And as you get into the habit of building character in the smaller areas in your life, your ability to develop strong character in more important areas will grow. Character, like a sandwich, is built in layers. “A great personality without a positive moral character is like building a beautiful house on a bed of quicksand.”

  17. How to Change? • Consider these :- • Understand • Desire • Remain flexible • Seek honest feedback about your character • Learn from your failures • Make tough ethical decisions • Handle success properly • Be the change you wish to see. • Lets start with ourselves. • Step by step, person by person, we can change entire communities.

  18. Logical Levels of Change Connection to something greater - God, family, nature, country Who am I? Why? (intention) How? (Skills, ability, competence) What? (The action we do in the environment) Where? (location) When? (date, time) Who with?

  19. Character for Life • Character development is a lifelong process.

The sense of integrity, conviction, incorruptibility, readiness at time to efface one-self for the collective good of the nation.” (Jinnah speech at Muslim Legislators’ Convention, Delhi, 11th April, 1946) • “No doubt, there are many people who do not quite appreciate when we talk of Islam.
