  2. This Series: • The point is to remind us that our relationship with Jesus is enhanced when we invest in that relationship.

  3. Reason, Season, or Lifetime?

  4. Field and Path

  5. An Active Relationship • Because we desire to mature what are some actions that can aid in that transformation?

  6. How Much, How Often? • How is God’s word getting into me, where does it go once it is inside and do I desire to spend time with God’s word?

  7. Romans 10:17 Page 1761 • Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

  8. Psalm 119 Background: • 176 Verses Long • Every Verse is About God’s Word • 8 Verse Hebrew Acrostic • Challenge – Read It This Week!

  9. Psalm 119:9-16 Page 957 • How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. 10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. 12 Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. 13 With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. 14 I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. 15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. 16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

  10. Practical Suggestions: • #1: Connect to God’s Word Somehow! • Try a read through the Bible plan (youversion), 30 day, 90 day, Psalm-Proverb-OT-NT, Bible in a Year bible…. • Read “Power for Today” • Devotional E-mail. • Verse a day calendar. • Find something that gives you God’s word not just comments about God’s word. You need to be in the word – no pre chewed food!

  11. 10 Tips • 1. As with all disciplines, time has to be made for reading. • 2. Begin reading what you can understand. Reading has to be profitable in order to be continued. • 3. For breadth, have a reading schedule that helps you with continuity. • 4. For depth, read the same text several times to increase familiarity. • 5. For study, use multiple translations to get a better understanding of the text.

  12. 10 Tips • 6. For context, read the text and books about the text. • 7. If someone else has the same reading schedule then talk over the text with them. • 8. Read in a place where you can concentrate and meditate. • 9. Try topical reading or reading the book summaries for a change of pace. • 10. Read with a note pad to record thoughts as you go along.

  13. Increase Retention: • 1. Be ready and eager to hear God by reminding yourself why you are doing this. • Consider the Parable of the Soils in Matthew 13:1-23 Page 1516 • Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

  14. Increase Retention: • 2. Deal with attitudes that prevent hearing God. • Therefore consider carefully how you listen.... Luke 8:18 • a. A Closed Mind:Is fear, pride or bitterness preventing me from hearing God? • b. A Superficial Mind: Am I really serious about wanting to hear God speak? • c. A Preoccupied Mind:Am I too busy and concerned with other things to concentrate on what God has to say?

  15. Increase Retention: • 3. Confess any sin in your life. • Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. James 1:21 • 4. Take notes on what you hear. • We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. Hebrews 2:1 • (Suggestion: Keep a spiritual notebook to record thoughts, commitments, and questions.)

  16. Increase Retention: • 5. Be prepared to act on what you hear! Ask yourself at the end of the reading how to apply it. • Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says….But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does. James 1:22, 25

  17. Confidence Through Context • 1. Who? • Is the author? • Is the audience? • 2. What? • Is the author’s intent? • Is the place of the writing? • Does the book tell us about God? • 3. When? • Was the book written? • Was it first read?

  18. Confidence Through Context • 4. Where? • Was the author when the book was written? • Is the book located? (History, Major prophets?) • 5. Why? • Has God preserved this book? • Is the author writing at this time?

  19. Study Resources: • Invest in a: • Study Bible, Bible Handbook, Bible Translations, Concordance, Bible Dictionary, Atlas, One Volume Commentary. • All of these items can be found in Bible computer programs or online.

  20. Taking It Home: • God’s word is living and active and used by the Holy Spirit to mature us. • Reaffirm your commitment to Jesus for a lifetime. • Read Psalm 119 and think of your relationship to God through His word. • If you do not have a reading plan begin one. • If you do have a reading plan consider your motives and work on retention. • Add in Bible study personally and with a group. • Next Week: Hearing God through Memorization!
