  5. Criminal Justice System in Canada • Our criminal Justice System is one of the largest and most expensive Social Institutions in the country. • In what ways do you think the “CJS” reflects our society and culture in Canada? • ___________________________________

  6. Our system is largely focussed on crime and punishment, deterrents, adversarial system (people work against each other to “win” a case. • INFORMAL systems operate separately from formal systems and are concerned with reconciliation and restoring community relations

Retributive vs. Restorative Justice Our CJS is: • Retributive: Give punishment for a crime • Adversarial – Crown and Defense lawyers. • Winners and Losers Other Systems that are Restorative; • Focus on roots of a problem. • Restoring relationships • Healing the Victi, Perpetrater and community • Rehabilitation
