UNEP Trade and Biodiversity Initiative • 4-year Initiative (mid 2005-2009) funded by EC and Sida • Objective: to support developing countries to assess, design and implement trade-related policies in the agricultural sector that safeguard biological diversity while maximizing development gains from trade liberalization • Develop guidance to assess impacts of trade on biodiversity • Support assessment and policy development at national level • Builds on UNEP’s work on integrated assessment of trade-related policies

CBD COP Decisions on trade and biodiversity • COP 6 Decision VI/5 (The Hague April 2002) : Impacts of trade liberalisation (17.) => Requests ES to study further the impacts of trade liberaliation on agricultural biodiversity in cooperation with UNEP, FAO, WTO and other relevant organisations • COP 8 Decision VIII/28 (Curitiba 2006): Strategic Environmental Assessment (12.(b)) => Requests ES to continue collaboration with UNEP Economics and Trade Branch and other relevant organisations in developing practical guidance on assessing impacts of trade on biodiversity and in compiling and making available information on good practises and positive impacts of trade on biodiversity

Objectives of the Workshop • Review progress of the country projects • Exchange of experiences among country project teams • Provide further guidance for completion of the integrated assessments • Identify specfic actions needed for finalization of assessment studies and development of national action plans • Collect feedback on the manual
