    1. TEACHING IN A MULTICULTURAL SETTING Introduction Globalization & technological advancement created new complex problems. Cultures bring together diverse backgrounds & attitudes in a classroom & campus environment. What is the contribution of these diverse cultures to education? Teachers should identify what/how learners should learn so as to lead fulfilling lives. Seek to create learners who are purposeful and self-directed to meet challenges of the twenty-first century.

    2. Objectives Identify hindrances to teaching and learning in a multicultural setting. To identify suitable teaching approaches in a multi-cultural setting. Describe teaching approaches used in the School of Family, Consumer Sciences and Technology. Propose a model for teaching and learning in a multi-cultural setting.

    3. Challenges to teaching and learning in a multi-cultural setting. Cultural, social, environmental, economic gender .. discrimination that affects both quality of and access to education. Lack of suitable resources necessary for the achievement of education goals. Misinterpretation of learning by learners from diverse cultures in a classroom situation.

    4. Challenges to teaching and learning in a multi-cultural setting. Emphasis on examination causes memorization of facts vis-ŕ-vis meaningful learning environment. There is misalignment of school and campus expectations. Fragmentation of curricula into independent “courses” or “units”. Poor reward and promotion procedures for Professors. Professors who lack training in education skills and or require in-service in teaching approaches.

    5. Teaching Approaches in a Multi-cultural Setting. Preliminaries Understand background of learners and their aspirations as a guide to what learners need to learn. Discussion & Encouragement. Discuss the goals and objectives of the course and help them then understand the process and action needed to attain set goals. Self-awareness of course purpose and value.

    6. Teaching Approaches in a Multi-cultural Setting. Preliminaries Create learners who can integrate knowledge of various types, understand complex situations and can use multiple tools to create solutions to difficult issues. Learners should translate information into knowledge and into action.
