10. 2006 the Douglas Economic Development Office re-established itself as the leading economic agency in the region… Before we go any further…let me take step back and share what we have been doing and what needs to be done How are we going to evolve as an economic development agency to make the top of the lists… Traditionally Economic Development has been thought in the following ways Employment/More Firms = More Jobs i.e. Retail/ Avg. Involved in numerous project and initiatives, including those that are not directly related to economic development BUT… important to developing the foundation for community sustainability… More specifically three areas of concentration where identified, key to capitalizing on the community’s strengths, external opportunities and developing weaknesses… The Economic Development Office will continue to evolve into a more comprehensive, innovative and global economic model… Transformation will reflect the activities we will pursue. Positioning Douglas/Agua Prieta as an in international hub for trade and commerce is vital for economic growth. 85-95% goods in manufactures in Mexico are exported to the U.S. Douglas Commercial Traffic Counts = 30,000 / El Paso or Nogales = 800,000 = Market Share of 3% = Border Wide =.5% Traffic counts comparable to commercial counts in any given city. (jobs, involvement in the community)… Entrepreneurs/ small business reflect characteristics of leader: Challenge the process, inspired and shared vision, enable others to act, model the way, encourage the heart… B3 exercise and reflection … however lack of cohesiveness… This morning we listened ….we can listen to all the various economic indicators and grand strategies/ but we as the business community do not come together and share a common vision than we will forever see our community as economically stagnate… Difficulty of the question “Community’s Strengths” (read list)… Fail to see Douglas as an emerging market … “Emerging Market” is opportunity for entrepreneurs and is the basis for growth, opportunity, sustainability, profitability, key word prosperity… Prosperity in terms of economically yes but quality… At the end of the day have chosen to be here for Douglas for xyz reasons… So let us shape the way we think, act, and operate towards the future… with the common vision that connects to a strategy we believe and will work towards bringing cohesiveness… In which together we perceived/experience Douglas not has we have for the last 20 years but how we will capitalize on what Douglas is now… An emerging market. “Best Quality of Life Article” – Small Business Concentration… Small Business Concentration in the community provide the leadership role.
