  3. Who is qualified for membership? • Top quarter of ECE juniors • Top third of ECE seniors • Graduate students • ECE Faculty • Professionals who have made a significant contribution to ECE

History • Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) was founded at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1904 by Maurice Carr • There are now about 200 chapters at universities across the U.S. and we are currently expanding into Canada • There are about 300,000 members • HKN members serve the community, university, and department in various activities. • Recently merged with IEEE.

Prominent HKN members • Larry Page, founder of Google • Eric Schmidt, CEO Google • Amar Bose, inventor of the Bose Speakers • Sabeer Bhatia, founder of Hotmail • David Filo, founder of Yahoo! • Henry Samueli, founder of Broadcom • Paul and Irwin Jacobs, founder of Qualcomm • HKN members are on the Board of Directors at many top tech companies including Google, IBM, Yahoo!, Motorola

  8. Leadership Conference • A weekend long meeting of HKN student leaders. • Past Locations: • University of Illinois (2011) • University of Oklahoma (2010) • University of Michigan, Dearborn (2009) • Carnegie Mellon University (2008) • University of California, Berkeley (2007)

  9. Costs • Dues: • $60 • Lifetime membership • Cost includes: • 1 year IEEE membership • Bridge magazine • Banquet (yourself + 1 guest) • Pin is optional • $25 • 50/50 Raffle to reduce your costs.

  10. Entrance Requirements • Three components: • Test • Faculty Signature Sheet • 2 Hours Service • Most Outstanding Initiate • Person with best combination of test score and faculty signatures. • Free HKN membership dues.

How to Join • Three steps that must be completed by March 9. • Join IEEE • If you are not already a member, we will send you instructions on how to join. • You will fill out the application for student membership, print the application to a pdf, and email the pdf to Kevin Burkett. • No additional cost to join IEEE. • Enter your HKN member information online • We will email you the address of a web form. • Fill the form out and submit. • Will need to include your IEEE member number. • Pay membership dues • $60 lifetime dues. • Make check out to “Eta Kappa Nu”. • Give to Dr. Valenti or an HKN officer.

  12. Induction and Banquet • April 20th is the induction ceremony: • 4:30 PM arrive at G39 • 5:00 PM induction ceremony • 6:00 PM reception @ Erickson • 7:00 PM banquet @ Erickson • Some details: • Register for banquet 3 weeks prior. • One free guest at banquet. • Guests encouraged at induction. • Business attire strongly encouraged. • Induction ceremony is required: • You are not a member until you are inducted.
