  3. Crossrail 2: Context - why is TfL reviewing Crossrail 2? • Following a request from the Secretary of State to the Mayor of London in 2009, TfL is undertaking a review of the safeguarded alignment to identify where possible changes should be made • London is growing rapidly, 1.3m more people and 0.75m more jobs by 2031 • Even with currently committed investment, this growth would lead to serious increases in crowding on rail and underground • Given the opportunity to review Crossrail 2, it makes sense to consider the safeguarded alignment afresh and decide if it should be changed to reflect new thinking and new development • TfL starting position – is a new line actually necessary? • Conclusion – definitely

  14. Crossrail 2: Wide-ranging support • London First published its final report into Crossrail 2 on 5th February • Lord Adonis said, “Today's report sets out a compelling plan with strong business support. Crossrail 2 is an integrated tube and rail service connecting south-west, central, and north-east London, benefiting millions of passengers and jobs.” • The Mayor said, “The case for the construction of Crossrail 2 is incontestable and is made forcibly in this report.  Over the next 20 years London’s population is forecast to expand to levels that will clog the Tube and rail arteries of our great city if we do not provide more capacity.  There is no time to lose and my team will work closely with London First and others on developing plans for this vital railway.” • Network Rail also strongly supports Crossrail 2.
