  3. Boothtown – some issues • Backing a winner: resources followed on from practical successes • Managing workloads, avoiding burn-out • Maintaining ‘light touch’ support. But whose job is it?

  4. East Pollokshields, Glasgow • Ethnically mixed area. Pop 8,000 • Housing Association with a community role • East Pollokshields Community Development Trust – a single voice • Action Plan: community planning

  5. East Pollokshields – some issues • Linking effectively to LA policies – especially Community Planning • Some political resistance to CDT • How to link up to big spending departments: housing, health, education, environmental services • What role for an anchor body?

  6. Caia Park, Wrexham • Big estate, pop 15k. Some race tensions • 17-year resident led partnership. Many services • 80 staff incl. residents • LA supportive on the whole

  7. Caia Park – some issues • Local councillor: some ambivalence to the Partnership • Brokerage by facilitator • Can the local authority – and the Welsh Assembly – commit long-term support to a resident led organisation?

  8. Promising ideas - 1 • Diversity – a real asset? • What is the role of the local councillor? • Community anchor organisations –do they have a unique selling point?

  9. Promising ideas - 2 • Local Area Agreements and ‘new localism’: district and neighbourhood LAAs in Birmingham; neighbourhood charters; the role for neighbourhood bodies. • A ‘light touch’ approach for less deprived areas? Could this idea be sold to Birmingham and other funders?
