  1. INTRODUCTION TO ASTRONOMY Unit 1 – History of astronomy pp1 Astronomy Mr. thompson

  2. WHAT IS SCIENCE?

  3. WHAT IS SCIENCE? • Science is a never-ending search for truth. • Truth is based on a set of facts and our understanding of those facts. • A good scientist must be ready to accept new facts as they are discovered and modify what is “true” in light of these facts. • Even though science in school is usually taught in classes that are limited to a certain area, such as chemistry or physics, science is science, no matter what topic is involved. • Science is being done whenever the scientific methodis used.

  4. THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD • State the problem. • Research the problem. • Form a hypothesis. • Test the problem. • Draw conclusions. Problem: Michael needs a date for Friday night?

  5. THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD • Michael needs a date for Friday night. • Who can he take? • Eliminate the possibilities • Eliminate poor choices • Consider likely choices • Michael’s date will be “_________________” • Michael asks “________________” for a date Friday night. • If: • YES, then hypothesis was correct, so Michael has a date for Friday night. • NO, the hypothesis was incorrect, then the experiment failed and Michael has no date.

  6. WHAT IS ASTRONOMY? https://youtu.be/QZDk1cbKp7s

  7. WHAT IS ASTRONOMY? • Astronomy is the study of the universe which includes the planets and their satellites, comets, meteors, stars and interstellar matter and star systems. • What does the study of Astronomy include: • History of Astronomy • Human space exploration • Our Solar System (Sun, Moon and planets) • Other stars and galaxies • Origins of the universe

  8. FIELDS OF ASTRONOMY • Archeoastronomy is the study of the astronomy of ancient people.

  9. OTHER FIELDS OF ASTRONOMY • Other astronomical fields include: • Cosmology • Astrometry – Oldest field of Astronomy • AstroPhysics • Planetary Science • Stellar Astronomy • Solar Astronomy • Many other fields…

  10. COSMOS • Cosmos is the orderly arrangement of the universe.

  11. WHY DO WE STUDY ASTRONOMY?

  12. NATURAL DISASTERS https://youtu.be/xPDKaUotWzg For example, comet or meteorite impacts

  13. SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY AND CUROSITY • For example – our instruments can see what our eyes cannot

  14. SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY AND CUROSITY • Space exploration

  15. EDUCATION OF AN INFORMED SOCIETY

  16. OUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE • Where are we?

  17. ORIGIN AND FATE OF THE UNIVERSE Cosmology seeks a scientific explanation for how the Universe began and how it might end (or will it go on forever?).

  18. RECREATION AND AESTHETICS • The Universe is beautiful.

  19. Eagle Nebula “Pillars of Creation”

  20. Veil Nebula

  21. TRUE SCIENCE VS. SCIENCE FICTION TRUE SCIENCE SCIENCE FICTION Planet Vulcan Starship Enterprise Aliens Death Star Nowhere Spaceballs!!!! • Black holes • Nebulas • High energy cosmic rays • Neutron stars • Io • Sagittarius “A”

  22. ASTROLOGY • Astrology is the belief the positions of celestial objects (i.e stars, planets) affect the way events occur on Earth.

  23. HOW DO WE KNOW ASTRONOMY OR ASTROLOGY IS A TRUE SCIENCE?

  24. TRUE SCIENCE… • What is the science based on? • Can scientists make and test precise predictions? • Does the science make use of other well-established sciences?

  25. Astronomy vs. Astrology

  26. ASTRONOMY • What is Astronomy based on? • Can scientists make and test precise predictions in Astronomy? • Does Astronomy make use of other well-established sciences?

  27. ASTROLOGY • What is Astrology based on? • Can scientists make and test precise predictions in Astrology? • Does Astrology make use of other well-established sciences?

  28. WHAT IS ASTRONOMY AND ASTROLOGY BASED ON? Astronomy uses observations and experiments that can be repeated, which give the same results, no matter who does the experiment or makes the observation. • Astrology uses observations which are not repeatable

  29. CAN SCIENTISTS MAKE AND TEST PRECISE PREDICTIONS IN ASTRONOMY AND ASTROLOGY? Astronomy makes precise predictions that can be tested to see if the predictions are true or not. • Astrology makes vague predictions, which cannot be tested to see if the predictions are true or not.

  30. DOES ASTRONOMY AND ASTROLOGY USE OTHER ESABLISHED SCIENCES? Astronomy makes use of other established sciences like physics and chemistry. • Astrology DOES NOT incorporate any other established sciences.

  31. AND THE WINNER IS….. Yes, Astronomy is a TRUE SCIENCE!!

  32. ASTROLOGY IS NOT A TRUE SCIENCE… NASA wrote, “Astronomy is the scientific study of everything in outer space. Astrology is something else. It’s not science.” https://youtu.be/tZ2ULO6KVwA

  33. REVIEW • Terms – • Astronomy • Archaeoastronomy • Cosmos • Astrology • Oldest field of Astronomy? • Why do we study Astronomy? • Astronomy vs. Astrology?
