  2. President Theodore Roosevelt • Known as “Teddy” Roosevelt or TR • America’s first Progressive President • TR became America’s youngest President at 42 when President McKinley was assassinated. • TR promised all Americans a “Square Deal”

  3. Square Deal • Use the textbook (page 343-344) to break down in your notes the 4 main ideas of the Square Deal.

Working with Business and Labor • TR saw the presidency as the Country’s manager who was in charge of keeping things running smoothly. • The United Mine Workers called a strike and shut down the Pennsylvania Coal Mines. • Months passed and the price of coal rose as winter approached, while the Union and the Mine owners would not make a deal. • Roosevelt urged the two parties to accept Arbitration- a settlement from an outside third party.

Consumer Protection • After Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle grabbed the country’s attention to the unsafe working conditions and food safety. • The Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in response- prohibited the unsafe or falsely labeled food or drugs from being sold. • Congress also passed the Meat Inspection Act

  9. Conservation • TR believed in Environmental Conservation and created the National Parks system which includes Yosemite National Park. • TR wanted to protect the Nation’s resources which he saw were being quickly destroyed.

  10. The First Modern President • TR’s legacy is as the first President who tried to improve the lives of the average American. • The Government shifts from Laissez-faire to actively trying to better Society.
