How we do it: • Pick a community, hold a "Home Ignition Zone” Seminar • Collect  a "Yes I'll help" list of citizens • Form a Fire Safe Council • Perform a Community Risk Evaluation • Identify areas of concern for mitigation projects • Create community maps & Google Earth projections • Establish priorities for these projects • Develop a "Community Wildfire Protection Plan" (CWPP) • Provide hands-on FSC management training • Perform a highly visible “Demonstration Project” • Begin wider community awareness - Communication • Teach how, and help apply for a first fire safety grant • Receive a first grant award • Complete a first mitigation project with NCFF assistance •  The community becomes a recognized “Firewise Community” • Enable a funding process for future projects • Use the CWPP to protect families & property into the future

Accomplishments: • Hosted over 40 community meetings to promote wildland fire awareness and explain state and local fire code regulations • Provide a free “on-call” chipping service, 5 days/week, 8 months a year: March-October • Over 780,000 cubic yards of flammable vegetation chipped through our countywide free chipping program since 2006. • Treated over 800 acres of dry wildland vegetation using goats and labor provided by county inmates. • Provided more than 300 hours of consulting to 10 communities - so far.
