  5. Students fleeing the area • 2006 – 5 shooting incidents at college/universities

  6. University of Washington, SeattleApril 2007 • Two killed in murder/suicide as domestic incident spills over to campus.

  7. Event Card #1 • It is 10 AM on Tuesday, May 1, Finals Week. • An exam is being given in M109 in a class of 16 when a student walks up to the professor, pulls a pistol from his backpack and shoots one time. The shot is heard in the Dean of Student’s office across the hall. Screaming can be heard from behind the classroom door.

  17. Event card #2 • The door is blocked and the shooter responds through the door that he has shot the professor but that he thinks that he is still alive. He threatens to start shooting others if he is not left alone. • He gives the officer his name and says that he just wants to go home.

  18. MEDIA • How would we deal with media? • How would we deal with getting information to parents?

  19. Administration • How is this impacting classes and how will they be rescheduled for finals?

  20. Event card #3 • It is now 1:30. After hours of negotiations a shot is heard from within the room. Voices start shouting that the shooter has taken his life. Upon entry to the room the student is found dead and the professor alive but seriously wounded.

  21. Aftermath • Would the surviving students be detained pending making statements? • Counseling Center response. • Impact on classes for the rest of the week. • Graduation.
