  1. Status of renewal of Buildings 115 & 507 Borge & Erwin Siesling

  2. Present Status

  3. Status of thebudgetRequest Propose to merge the two Class C laboratories by extending building 115 and to bring the laboratory up to standards • JUSTIFICATION • Elimination of the risk associated with the transport of radioactive sources across the Route Einstein from building 170 (ISOLDE experimental hall) to building 275 • Reduction of the number of Class C type laboratories on the CERN site. This will enable better control of open source handling and minimize the operational costs for such laboratories. • Confinement of all open source handling at ISOLDE within an adequately controlled perimeter. • Upgrading of the present Class C laboratory in building 115 • Moving the Class C laboratory from building 275 into the ISOLDE Facility perimeter will increase the available office space at CERN: the up-stair rooms in building 275 can be used again as offices - without being in conflict with radiation protection requirements. • For the modification and extension of building 115 to Class C specifications 400kCHF for 2013 In agreement with the Civil Engineering group at CERN, the work can start in January 2013 and be completed by the end of 2013. • SUBMITTED toSigorLettowSeptemberthe 5th

  4. User Facilities • Building 507 is in very bad stage. • Profit for the shutdown to demolish • and build a new one Ceiling Cracks on the external wall Broken external panels

  5. Replace the existing building 507 by a new building / modular cabins: • Ground floor (only accessible from within the surveyed area): • - Labs and workshop • First floor (accessible from outside the surveyed area): • - Data Acquisition rooms • - Meeting room/Visitors Center • - (Kitchen?) • Design study: • Eliseo Perez-Duenas GS/SE

  6. Cost studies new B 507(508) Use of modular cabins instead of a full concrete building Phase 1: estimate 160kSFr - dismounting the present building 30kSFr - construction permit - adapting the concrete foundation 130kSFr Phase 2: estimate 520kSFr - (non-standard) modular cabins, interconnected and on 2 floors - total surface 435 m2 - not taken in account electrical installations, CV, Labo’s, etc. - Present Cooling and Ventilation was done by CERN in 1990. We assume a cost similar to the one of Bat 115 of 70kSFr x 3 (bigger)= 210 SFr One way to optimize the cost of CV is making a “confort” system for the full building (assumed by CERN) and dedicated CV for laser rooms pay by Experiments & ISOLDE Collaboration. • Advantages: - lower costs • - fast construction ESTIMATED IN AROUND 4 months • - flexible work floor

  7. Replace building 507 Replacing the existing building 507 by a new building - Ground floor (only accessible from within the surveyed area):

  9. Planned – Buildingdistribution Free access Controlled access Controlled area

  10. Why do we need to demolish and replace building 507? • Have a building in working conditions! • Due to regulations of RP, physicists cannot sit in the hall when HIE-ISOLDE LINAC is running. This prompts the need of a new distribution of top floor of Bat. 507, to accommodate DAQ rooms. • It has to be done during shut down, LS1, as the bottom floor allocates the laser for Atomic and Nuclear Physics Studies. • Open the ISOLDE Facility to visitors and General public which will not be allowed in the hall after LS1 due to safety regulations. • All necessary studies has been done • The project is ready for submission and approval • Identify a possible company, the one finishing HIE-ISOLDE • Possible requirement of paying for extra CV for lasers room

  12. Present Status • BothDepartment PH (PhilippeBloch) and BE ( Paul Collier) agree and supporttheneedtodemolish and re-builtbuilding 507 • Luigi Scibile, Group Leader of GS-SE withthe mandate “TheGroupisresponsibletoprovide, tomaintain in workingconditionsincludingtheir eventual operation and torenovatethe civil engineeringstructures and infrastructures” 29 October 2012 (L. Scibile) Wehaveincludedtherefurbishment of the 507 (future 508) in thelistof potentialconsolidationworksfor 2013. Probable decision at theend of November
