  2. Physical Activity vs. MVPA • Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure • Any activity is better than being sedentary (Ex. Cleaning house vs watching TV) • Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) is a higher level of physical activity (≥ brisk walk) • Beneficial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle

  3. MVPA • Examples of Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity • Biking • Dancing • Swimming • Playing soccer • Body cues to know you are doing MVPA • Breathing harder • faster heartbeat • warm face • sweating

  4. Benefits of MVPA • Control your weight • Reduce your risk of lifestyle diseases • Strengthen your bones and muscles • Improve your mental health and mood • Increase life expectancy

  5. Screen Time and Physical Activity • Screen Time- the total amount of time a person spends in front of any type of electronic media screen • Examples • Watching TV shows, movies • Surfing the Internet, social networking, downloading music • Playing video, computer, handheld games • Texting

Screen Time and Physical Activity • What are you really doing when you are involved in screen time? • Not moving for long periods of time • Not paying attention to how much time is passing • Spending time that could be used on productive things such as homework, sleep, or MVPA • Possible consequences of not enough MVPA • Weight gain • Feeling tired • Increased feelings of anxiety • Decreased self-esteem

MVPA, Screen Time, and You. • 60 minutes a day is the recommended minimum amount of physical activity for teens. • 2 hours a day is the recommended maximum amount of screen time for teens. • How much moderate to vigorous physical activity do you get a day? • What is your screen time usage per day?
