  1. Active / Active Data Center TechnologiesHitachi Data Systems Global Competitive and Market Intelligence

  2. Active / Active Data Center Technologies – The Why • Active / Active load balancing between data centers • Deployment similar to Web Server Farms using integrated load balancing technologies • Federated management of multisite IT Environment • Seamless application and VM mobility across sites • Improve BC/DR RPO/RTO for Mission Critical Workloads

  3. Active / Active Data Center TechnologiesEMC - VPLEX

  4. Active / Active Data Center TechnologiesNetApp – FAS / V-Series Metro Cluster

  5. Active / Active Data Center TechnologiesIBM – SVC Stretched Cluster

  6. Active / Active Data Center Technologies Deployment Considerations External Appliance 4-Way Cluster – Requires 64 SAN FC Ports to Implement Embedded Storage Virtualization within the Array – Requires Enough Ports to Handle Throughput – No Scale-out Penalty

  7. Active / Active Data Center TechnologiesServer or Rack Outage Server or Rack Outage – VMotion to local server within the local cluster- Only requires SAN connectivity. No Active / Active technology required

  8. Active / Active Data Center TechnologiesData Center Outage - Alternative Data Center Outage – For environments requiring automated recovery over extended distance or 3DC or 4DC DR capabilities support may be limited or additional products may be required

  9. Active / Active Load Balancing TechnologiesLoad Balancing - Alternatives • TEST / QA / PROD • PROD / QA / TEST • TEST LPAR • QA LPAR • PROD LPAR • PROD LPAR • QA LPAR • TEST LPAR VMotion Based Load Balancing – Cost and effort required to VMotion VMs to balance underutilized servers may not provide an ROI that surpasses cost to deployment . Technologies such as x86 Blade Server based Logical Partitioning which allows execution of Production, Q & A, and Test workloads on a common physical server may provide a better was to drive utilization across servers

  10. Active / Active Data Center TechnologiesActual Value Active / Active Data Center “True Value” – The environments that can truly justify an Active / Active Deployment are Mission Critical Application that cannot tolerate any loss or disruption of access. However, most customers are hesitant to run these types of workloads on a hypervisor and if they did they typically would not allow VM Administrators to modify configurations (VMotion) during processing hours

  11. Active / Active Data Center Technologies Deployment Cautions • Technologies may throttle performance of high-end storage arrays thus negativity impacting their performance and value . • Networking implementation costs must be considered and can increase cost and complexity • Quorum Disk may not function over extended distances • Costs associated with deploying Active / Active Data Center Technologies may exceed the Return on Investment if not done prudently • Active / Active Data Center Technologies may require customers also deploy additional technologies in support of Disaster Recovery
