Republic of Vanuatu • An Archipelago – a Y shaped string of more than 80 islands. • Self Governing Republic in July 1980 • Population of about 200,000 Melanesian race dominating also includes French, British, Australians, New Zealanders, Asians and other Pacific Island races. • 80% live in rural areas and 20% live in urban area • Annual Growth rate is 2.5 per cent • Over 110 languages and National Languages are; Bislama, English & French

STRATEGIES • INSTITUTIONAL • Policy development, current status Vanuatu has 2 Acts that deals with Wastes very general; • - Public Health Act & Water Resource Management Act • - An Ad hock committee still to be officially endorsed • Capacity building • - Officers training in JICA waste management course • Information Exchange • - done with cross cutting issues but still to be improved • Public education and awareness – Govt. dept, NGOs

  5. Waste Minimization Activities • Community awareness through Media, theatrical group and talks & discussions • Participation – Govt. Dept, NGOs • - Home garden Composting, also in schools • - Year of Traditional Economy encouraged use of local baskets • Reuse ; Glass bottles • Recycling; Aluminum cans, brass, electrical and telephone cables, (small scale)

Waste Management & Disposal System • Bouffa Landfill Project; • - semi aerobic method, JICA funded • - started in September 2006 • - formulate management plan and possible segregation of wastes • - transfer of technology ( Capacity building) • Health Care Waste Incinerator (Vila) • Quarantine Wastes burned at landfill

LIFE IN TROPICAL GARDENOF EDEN • Imagine living in a place where the earth was so organic and fertile that turns into trees and the hardest part about gardening is to try and stop plants and trees from growing. I have found such a place and with it happy, healthy people who live in sustainable harmony with their environment. • TANKIO BIGWAN
