  1. Warm up: May 7, 2012 • New paper please… Describe our “Star” • Its name • What it is made of • What it provides to life on Earth

  2. Core Learning Goal The student will be able to explain the physical behavior of the environment, Earth, and the universe.

  3. Today’s Objectives: Students will be able to… • List and describe the outer parts of the sun. • Plot the cycle of sunspots and determine the pattern from data given

  4. The Sun Parts of the Sun • Photosphere – is the bright visible surface of the sun (6000°C)

  5. The Sun • Granules – light and dark areas of photosphere: when magnified looks like sand grains (results from Hot gases rising and cooler gasses sinking)

  6. The Sun • Sunspots– large dark cooler gas regions on the photosphere. http://www.spaceweather.com/

  7. The Sun • Sunspots are caused by magnetic effects resulting from the equator of the sun rotating faster than the poles.

  8. The Sun • Sunspot cycle – increases and decreases on a __11__ year cycle. • Average sunspot is about the size of the earth.

  9. The Sun • Galileo was first to observe sunspots and went blind because of the sun’s harmful radiation waves.

  10. The Sun • Chromosphere – reddish layer above the photosphere (color layer).

  11. The Sun • Corona – The outer most layer of the sun (2 million °C) can only be seen during a solar eclipse.

  12. Time to plot the:Sunspot cycle

  13. Vocabulary Words • Let’s brainstorm and list vocabulary words for this unit and make certain that we understand the concepts and meaning.

  14. View to Review!
