  1. The sieve and the sand Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury

  2. The Sieve and the Sand • Pages 71-73 • Montag and Mildred think someone is at the door. Why doesn’t the door-voice tell them if someone is there? • What does Mildred think is at the door? What is at the door? • What is Montag talking about when he says he saw a snake? • What is a rumor Montag has heard?

  3. Answers • Pages 71-73 • Montag shut it off. • Mildred says, “It’s only a dog, that’s what! You want me to shoo it away?” But the narrator tells us about “the smell of electricity blowing under the locked door.” This tells us it is probably the mechanical hound.

  4. Answers • Pages 71-73 • He’s referring to the machines that “rescued” Mildred after she took too many pills. • “The world is starving, but we’re well fed…the world works hard and we play…” They don’t know what’s going on in the rest of the world. People are dying in wars and they aren’t even aware of it.

  5. Discussion for Reflection • Is Mildred interested in joining Guy’s crusade to read books and figure out what’s going on? • What are two quotes that support your answer?

  6. The Sieve and the Sand • Pages 74-75 • What does Montag remember when he is wondering where to get a teacher? 6. Who is the English Professor? 7. Why did the last liberal arts college shut down? 8. When Faber was about to leave Montag, he said some things. What did Montag think he was reciting? 9. What does Faber mean by “I don’t talk things, sir. I talk the meaning of things. I sit here and know I’m alive” (75)? 10. What does Faber give Montag at the end of their meeting?
