Background • S&T in China • - 2006 (2006-2020): Innovation is the new strategy of China - Driving China into an innovative nation by 2020 - Bottlenecks: energy, natural resources, environment - Strength: human resources (38M S&T personnel; 1.2M in R&D activities – 2nd after USA) - Investment in major national universities and in international S&T collaboration • Agriculture in China -A new countryside policy - Increase farmers’ revenues - Improve quality and safety of food and environment

What AAFC has done in S&T in China since 2004 • 14 MOUs between AAFC and other Chinese organisations and universities • 8 workshops and symposiums • 2 senior managers Forum • 1 S&T High technology Fair in China • MOE-AAFC program for 2nd year Ph.D students (20 students yearly) • More than 30 joint projects (3rd after USA and France) • Post-doctoral visiting scientists (20-40 yearly) • Hosts visiting scientists and graduate students (20+ yearly) • Expertise, advice and program delivery for CIDA and IDRC projects • Guest speakers at conferences, committees, and program • Adjunct professors, supervision of graduate students, training
