  5. HIGHER EDUCATION IN RUSSIA AND THE NETHERLANDS…www.urfu.ru TRENDS: GLOBAL Thus: ONLY WORLD-CLASS UNIVERSITIES CAN COMPETE ON THE GLOBAL SCALE TODAY, WHEN, ON THE ONE HAND, THE MARKET IS GROWING FAST, AND, ON THE OTHER HAND, STUDENTS INCREASINGLY CHOOSE NEW STUDY DESTINATIONS Russia started 5-100-2020 project, similar programme (3-100-2020) has been initiated by Malaysia… The attention to the global competitiveness, thus, seems to be a new global tendency in higher education.

  6. HIGHER EDUCATION IN RUSSIA AND THE NETHERLANDS…www.urfu.ru What is World Class University (WCL)? According to: Nian Cai Liu et al., Paths to a World-Class University. Lessons from Practices and Experiences, Sense: Rotterdam, Boston, Taipei, 2011, p. x.

  7. HIGHER EDUCATION IN RUSSIA AND THE NETHERLANDS…www.urfu.ru • Here the Netherlands certainly have a lot to teach Russia about, namely: • How to recruit large number of international students (in Russia this number is still too small) • How to get the research outputs published in internationally recognized journals (unfortunately, Russia still lags behind all BRIC countries in this respect) • How to introduce innovative ways of teaching and learning (e.g. PBL in Maastricht) • How to get the research projects financed by European funds (Fp76 for example)

  8. HIGHER EDUCATION IN RUSSIA AND THE NETHERLANDS…www.urfu.ru • Russia, on the other hand does have: • Rich experience of both teaching and research of really high quality (especially in natural sciences and engineering) • Ambitious well-educated researchers, capable of implementing joint projects • Strong industry and developing economy to organize joint innovative projects based on knowledge transfer

  9. HIGHER EDUCATION IN RUSSIA AND THE NETHERLANDS…www.urfu.ru • Thus, I hope, we will talk today: • On how to render our relations mutually beneficial, since only such relations are really sustainable. • I think that these relations should be as wide as possible, but must be aimed at joint development of the three main spheres: • Teaching • Research, and • Innovations • in the light of enhancing competitiveness of Russian and Dutch universities on the global scale. • Rich experience of both teaching and research of really high quality (especially in natural sciences and engineering) • Ambitious well-educated researchers, capable of implementing joint projects • Strong industry and developing economy to organize joint innovative projects based on knowledge transfer

  10. I WISH TO ALL OF US EVERY SUCCESS IN THESE IMPORTANT THINGS!
