  2. Tested teaching phylogenetic coding using bivalve shells – NSTA, March 2009 (Ross, R. Kissel) • CT scans for exhibit, CU MicroimagingCtr • Mercenariamercenaria, Mytilusedulis • Plans for research use?? • EOL/Animal Diversity Web • Evolution course, Univ Chicago Winter ‘10 (Bieler, P. Sierwald)

  3. Species Pages on EoL EoLSpecies Pages have a structured template, covering species attributes and literature (e.g., habitat, distribution, bibliography) EoL aggregates from data from various sources, e.g., ADW: Animal Diversity Web, University of Michigan WORMS: World Register of Marine Species ARKive: Fishbase Imports taxonomic authority files from ITIS, Catalog of Life, Species 2000, GBIF, quality of taxonomic data variable Linked to Biodiversity Heritage Library: display of digitized literature references containing species name Many invertebrate species pages feature just one item: the name

  4. Making Species Pages on EoL Requires functional LifeDesk on EoL Encyclopedia of Life Learning + Education Group, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University Problem: uploading interfaces MAY become available/functional in spring 2010

  5. Generating Species Pages Now • We are using Animal Diversity Web, University of Michigan • http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/index.html • Is set up to receive, review and publish Species Pages • Undergraduate Students produce Species Pages as part of a university course • Benefit to students: • Real Life Experience, not a standard test or term paper regurgitating existing data to obtain a single grade • Student’s contribution to the dissemination of knowledge • Species pages list author and reviewer by name

  6. Species Pages from our course will be completed end of March • We give updates, summarize procedures, failures and successes • We will revise our Species Page Template and share it with you • Bivalve Species: Pectenmaximus Donaxvariabilis Calyptogenamagnifica Panopeaabrupta Lunarcaovalis Chama macerophylla
