Remember What Worship Is? • The main Hebrew word: • Shacah – to bow down in obedient reverence • The main Greek Word: • Proskuneo – to bow down and kiss the hand of • The Old English: • Derived from the word worth-ship. • Meaning to denote worthiness to the one receiving the honor or devotion.

  3. Remember God’s Word on Authority One God and one guide. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) • Authority is vital: • “not beyond the things that are written.” (1 Corinthians 4:6) • Abide in the doctrine of Christ. (2 John 9) • Spirit and truth (John 4:24) • Do not transgress. (1 John 3:4)

  4. Singing Holds a Special Place Could it make or break our hearts? • Singing lifts our lives: • Victory after the Red Sea (Exodus 15) • Commitment in Prison (Acts 16:25) • Exhortation (Colossians 3:16)

  5. A cappella Singing? A distinctive trait of the first century church was the absence of the instrument in praising God. • The real a cappella: • A cappella is an Italian word meaning music from the chapel Pope Vitalian is noted as bringing the instrument into worship services in the late 600’s.

  6. Why Worship in Song? Do we sing when we are feeling materially joyful? • Why not sing when we are spiritually joyful? • James 5:13 • Psalm 27:6 • Colossians 3:16

  7. Why Worship in Song? Is Sunday the only time we praise God in song? • Our purpose in song: • To praise God (see Acts 16:25) • To speak to one another(see Ephesians 5:19) • To teach one another (see Colossians 3:16) • To admonish one another (see Colossians 3:16)

  8. How Should We Sing? Should our singing be a ritual formed or a joyful praise from sacred hearts? • Ephesians 5:19 • Psalms – inspired writings of the Psalter or the books of Psalms • Hymns – songs directed toward God • Spiritual Songs – songs of the Christian experience, songs to each other

  10. How Have You Been Singing? Did your emotions blend with the words of each song to kiss the hand of God? • How will you sing? • Will you understand each song? (1 Corinthians 14:15) • Will it be mechanical singing?(Amos 5:21-24) Will you sing in joyful, thankful reverence to the Father of all blessings?
