The language of mathematics provides powerful tools like formulas, graphs concepts like functions, ... to build up models that describe reality in a logical way While learning mathematics, you develop skills in recognizing structure systematic problem solving checking the plausibility of an obtained result …
  3. Why mathematics in the BBA? … Mathematical concepts and methods are further used in courses like statistics economics financial algebra econometrics …
  4. Brushing up course review of the mathematical concepts and methods prerequisite to the BBA math course algebraic skills linear equations/inequalities, linear functions, systems of linear equations quadratic equations and inequalities, quadratic functions exponents and logarithms, simple exponential equations preparation for the assessment
  5. Assessment : Purpose stimulate you to study the prerequisite material in depth with the aim of being well prepared for the start of the BBA math course give you a clear view on whether or not you master this prerequisite material advise you about the most appropriate course package for you standard: 2h/week + tutorial (optional) slow: 4h/week (same material/exam)
  6. Assessment : Who? Inside Council of Europe assessment test: obligatory brushing up course: in your advantage Outside Council of Europe (already did SAT) If 500  SAT < 550 (or 19  ACT < 22): assessment + brushing up course obligatory If SAT  550 (or ACT  22): assessment voluntarily
  7. Assessment : When? Monday 16 September (and Tuesday 17 September, if necessary): test Tuesday 17 September (or Wednesday 19 September, if necessary): appointment with the lecturers information about your result advice about the most appropriate mathematics package for you
  8. Assessment : What? oral with written preparation may take up to 3 or 4 hours example test on www.hubrussel.be/mathematics > brushing up course you need to bring: pen ruler scientific (or graphical) calculator you will need a graphical calculator TI84/83/82STATS for the math course in BBA, but for the test a scientific calculator is sufficient if you do not have a graphical calculator: wait for the information in class before you buy one if you do not have a scientific calculator either: you can borrow one, ask the teachers as soon as possible

Haeussler, R.S. Paul, R.J. Wood: Introductory Mathematical Analysis for Business, Economics, and the life and social sciences (Pearson Education) (= text book from the BBA math courses)
  11. Brushing up course Monday – Friday 9.00 – 13.00 After each class you are expected to spend about 2 hours to study and do supplementary exercises During the weekend of 13-14 september you are expected to rehearse the content and do extra exercises
  12. Test your math skills online! Friday 13 September, 14:00 - 17:00 start-up session in computer room 5215 perfect opportunity to test your algebraic skills(and/or knowledge about linear and quadratic functions) you will receive an account and password during the brushing up course if you registered late for the brushing up course: registerbefore Wednesday evening for the online test to obtain a user account and password www.hubrussel.be/mathematics > online math test you will receive an e-mail containing your account and password on Thursday do not forget to bring your account and password to the session on Friday afternoon
