  2. 12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And • “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? • 19Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

  3. Don’t be Surprised • Matt 10: 25:If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they malign those of his household. • John 15: 18“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you... • John 16: 2They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. • 1 John 3: 13Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you

  4. A Faith Issue • In the midst of suffering, we trust that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy. • God is still good, wooing our hearts! • God knows how to rescue and judge. • God is slow, as some understand, because he doesn’t want any to perish! (He is after our hearts)

  5. 12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

  6. Matthew 5 • 10“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. • 11“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  13. “Not that I am (I think) in much danger of ceasing to believe in God. The real danger is coming to believe such dreadful things about Him. The conclusion I dread is not “so there is not god after all,’ but ‘So this is what God’s really like. Deceive yourself no longer.’” C.S. Lewis journal, after his wife’s death
