Research justification • Due to the high prevalence of dengue fever in Malaysia. • High fatality dengue cases reported throughout Malaysia every year. • To find out whether the level of awareness about dengue fever in 2nd year is higher than 1st year Biomedical Sciences students • To create awareness towards the issue of dengue fever in the following aspects: -Risk factors -Signs and symptoms -Epidemiology -Precaution steps -Treatment • Hopefully, the result of this research is useful for future research in preventing dengue fever in order to improve Malaysian’s quality of life.

  6. LITERATURE REVIEW • Definition • Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, mainly the Aedesaegyptispecies. • The virus is contracted by mosquito bite but is not contagious, i.e. cannot be spread directly from person to person. • There are four strains or serotypes of dengue virus namely DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4. • Infection with one of these serotypes does not provide cross-protective immunity, so a person living in an area where Dengue Fever transmission occurs can have four dengue fever infections during his or her lifetime.

Epidemiology • Dengue viruses occur in most tropical areas of the world. • Common in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Australia, and the Americas. • In Malaysia: 1902 -> Earliest recorded case of dengue fever in Penang. 1962 -> First major dengue outbreak in Penang. 1973-> Nationwide outbreak in Kuala Lumpur

  8. Dengue Cases In Malaysia From 1998-2008 **Since 1st - 25th Jan 2009, 4221 dengue fever cases with 12 fatality cases have been reported!**

  9. Symptoms • Sudden high fever (39-41.5°C) for 2 to 7 days • Pain behind the eyes • Muscle/Joint/ Bone pain • Severe headache • Rash

  10. Risk Factors • Live or travel in tropical areas • Stay in places with nearby stagnant water reservoirs and with no mosquito protection • Had dengue fever before • Young, white and female

  12. GENERAL OBJECTIVE • To study the current level of knowledge, attitude and practice among 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students in UKM 2009 about Dengue fever

Specific Objectives • To compare the knowledge, attitude and practice level on Dengue fever according to year of study • To compare the knowledge, attitude and practice level on Dengue fever according to gender • To compare the knowledge, attitude and practice level on Dengue fever according to races

Hypotheses • There is difference in the knowledge, attitude and practice level towards Dengue fever between the 1st and 2nd year students. • There is difference in the knowledge, attitude and practice level towards Dengue fever between male and female. • There is difference in the knowledge, attitude and practice level towards Dengue fever among the Chinese, Malays, Indians and others.

  16. BACKGROUND • The respondents are 1st and 2nd year UKM Biomedical Sciences students in 2009. • They are from the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences in University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Campus Kuala Lumpur.

RESEARCH DESIGN • Cross-sectional studies • It is one of the observation studies in which the researcher just observes and analyses the researchable objects or situation but does not intervene. • It is used to analyze data collected on a group of 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students at one time only. • This study allows us to assess our respondent’s current level of knowledge, attitude and practice towards dengue fever.

  18. Sampling method • Stratified Random Sampling - Aimed to reduce variation of the sample. • Target Population - All Biomedical Sciences students in UKM KKL. • Sample population - A group of 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students in UKM KKL.

Sample Size • By using stratified random sampling, we group the member of the population into H subgroups or strata (1st year & 2nd year biomedical students) before sampling. • The sample units in each stratum is homogeny. • Each subgroup (1st year or 2nd year) has a sample size of Nh. ~ Nh 1st year:84 students ~ Nh 2nd year: 97 students

We then employ simple random sampling to choose our sample to be used in comparison by gender and race • Simple random sample of size nh is selected from each stratum. • Random number is used to obtain the sample. • The sampling fraction is nh/ Nh. • In general, the size of sample in each stratum is taken in proportion to the size of stratum.

  21. In our research: ~ Nh 1st year: 84 students ~ Nh 2nd year: 97 students ~Total: 181 students • Total 1st year students = 84 students - sample size = 78 • total 2nd year students = 97 students - sample size = 83 • Total sample size =78 + 83 = 161 (According to the table of given population)

  22. MATERIALs/METHODs BEING USED • Questionnaire forms - consist of 3 sections a) knowledge (multiple choice question) b) attitude (likert scales) c) practice (multiple choice question) - each section have their own score - from these questionnaire, data will be collected and analyze using SPSS.

Research analysis • Independent t-test - to compare means of 2 groups which are unpaired, having normal distribution and numerical scales - eg: compare means of KAP study between 1st and 2nd year biomedical students - if not normally distributed – Mann-Whitney test • One way ANOVA - comparing mean of more than 2 groups of an independent variables - eg: compare means of KAP study by races (Malay, Chinese, Indian and Others) • One Way Chi square -

Defining variables • Dependent Variables: • knowledge, attitude and practice level towards Dengue fever • Knowledge - refers to the respondents’ understanding of any given topic- Dengue fever in this case • Attitude - refers to their feelings towards this subject, as well as any preconceived ideas that they may have towards it • Practice - refers to the ways in which they demonstrate their knowledge and attitude through their actions.

  25. Independent Variables: • The gender and race of the respondents, their year of study and the location from where they originate • Gender – Male or Female • Race – Chinese, Malays, Indians or Others • Year of study – 1st or 2nd year UKM Biomedical Sciences students of session 2008-2009
