  3. Ottoman Empire 1. The Ottoman empire began in present day Turkey after the fall of the Byzantine empire. 2. Why is the geographic location of Constantinople so desirable? origins

  4. Ottoman Empire The Ottoman empire was Muslim. Muslims followed Islamic law, but they allowed other religions to practice freely in conquered areas. Suleyman the Lawgiver was the most successful Ottoman ruler. He converted, educated, and trained Christian boys to from his own personal army. law and government Suleiman the Lawgiver

  5. Safavid Empire • Began in Persia or present day MiddleEast. Shah Abbas

  6. Safavid Empire The Safavids followed the Shi’itebranch of Islam. Safavid kings were known as shahs The most successful ruler was Shah Abbas.He promoted religious tolerance but used fear to keep power. He killed or blinded many of his sons in fear that they might try to overthrow him. The empire crumbled shortly after his death. religion

  7. Mughal Empire • The Mughal Empire included what is mostly present day India.

  8. Mughal Empire Babur became king at eleven years old. He expanded the empire with his military. Babur’s grandson, Akbar, also expanded the Mughal empire. He also kept peace in his empire by allowing people to practice different religions. ShahJahan was a later leader that is known for building the TajMahal as a memorial for his dead wife.   9. Choose 1 • Draw a picture illustrating one of the muslim empires from today. • Write an 8 line poem that rhymes describing one of the muslim empires. • Make 5 flashcards for any of the key words from the lecture. Put the word on one side, and a definition/description and picture on the other.

  10. Ticket out the door • Choose two words from your test taking vocabulary list and write a sentence about Standard 12 for each. • Example • Under the rule of Shah Abbas, the Safavid empire acquired many new territories by fighting their rivals.
