Turning Research into Every Day Practice • For past two years, SHRP2 research has been wrapping up and implementation gearing up • Products include: • Guides • Software tools • New processes • Technologies and Tools • Testing procedures • Collaborative-decision making protocols • Driver behavior data

  3. Efforts are Collaborative • Implementation is cooperative. It engages: • AASHTO • FHWA • SHRP2/TRB staff • States are the customers of AASHTO implementation • FHWA, TRB also serve locals, academia, MPOs

  4. Prioritizing States’ Needs • AASHTO’s role is focused on identifying which products meet the states’ practical needs • We are relying on members and committees to define how implementation can be successful

  5. What Can SHRP2 Solutions Do For You? • Use new assessment tools and processes to understand – and respond to – risk. • Better plan for and predict travel-times on busy roadways. • Manage complex projects – of allsizes and complexity – with next generation strategies. • Deliver a quality product using model performance specifications.

FHWA Implementation Assistance Program Opportunities for implementation assistance • Proof of Concept Pilots • Lead Adopter Incentives • User Incentives Timeline • Application process through FHWA • First round awards announced May 3, 2013 • Tentative schedule for second round: • Product announcements in June • Product webinars in July • Solicitation in early August, final applications due early September; announcement October

  7. Looking forward: Updated SHRP2 Implementation Funding More funding will be available Current funding available: • SAFETEA-LU $81 Million • FFY 2012 MAP-21 $11 Million • FY 2013-14 SP&R funding $58 Million • Additional FHWA funding $18 Million Estimated total funding available: $168 Million

  8. Expanding the Program • More money: Additional $87 million available to put toward implementation • More products: 39 additional research projects are becoming available • More experience: Engaging states to champion product implementation

AASHTO Implementation Task Force • ITF Meeting, March 28-29 - 28 State DOTs met to review products for next round of implementation plan • Survey of AASHTO Committeesto gauge value of potential new products • 11 meetings of Focus Area Teams • Engagement of FHWA and TRB • ITF Recommendations now being developed

  11. Next Steps for SHRP2 • SHRP2 Oversight Committee determines expanded program and next products (June 2013) • Begin full-scale state implementation of first six products (Summer 2013+) • Next round of Implementation Assistance(Late summer 2013) • Begin planning implementation of 2014 products

Become a champion for the products that fit your program Identify key technical stakeholders and advocates within your states Carry the message back to your colleagues and peers Become a “lead state” Provide panel members for ImplementationPlanning Workshops Participate in technical transfer and implement products
